'Unplayable' MCG pitch was a 'genuine' risk to players

Victoria captain Peter Handscomb admitted his comments about the MCG may have influenced the groundsman

Both captains agreed that there was a genuine risk that a player could have been seriously injured on the MCG pitch that forced the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Western Australia to be abandoned, while Peter Handscomb admitted comments he made last week about needing more life in the surfaces may have influenced the groundsman. The game was suspended on the first afternoon and then called off on Sunday morning after Western Australia’s batsmen were hit repeatedly around the head and chest with deliveries rearing off a length. The pitch had started soft and divots were created, which led to the alarmingly uneven bounce. It is less than three weeks until the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand, which will be played on an adjacent surface.”The game’s been abandoned so it was a pretty genuine risk,” Handscomb said. “The players want to play cricket, that’s why we are here, but player safety is key and that’s where this decision has come from.”Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, who sustained painful blows to the ribs, underwent concussion tests after the opening day.”It was quite dangerous and as the game went on it got worse,” Marsh said. “As the pitch dried out it became unplayable. My players’ safety is at the forefront of my mind. The right decision has been made and lessons will be learnt.”Following the previous Sheffield Shield match at the ground, against New South Wales, which fizzled out into a draw due to rain over the last two days, Handscomb spoke about the need to bring more life back to the pitches.”[The] MCG pitch hasn’t deteriorated for ten years,” he said. “So I think we need to start making the game accelerate at the start of it, maybe make it a bit greener like it is in Hobart, where the game accelerates at the start and then becomes a good batting wicket. But that’s up to the groundsman and see how they go.”Asked whether those comments played a part in influencing what head groundsman Matt Page produced this weekend, he said: “I think it may have helped him. We’ve had a lot draws at the MCG and it’s about finding a wicket that can get a result. Unfortunately, he’s gone a touch too far and I’m sure come Boxing Day he’ll prepare a beautiful cricket wicket.”Hindsight is a great thing. Unfortunately you can’t change anything that you do. I said stuff, that happens, so be it.”Both Handscomb and Marsh offered their support to Page, who moved to the MCG after being head groundsman at the WACA. “I know Pagey very well. He’s done some really good things since coming here. He was a great groundsman at the WACA,” Handscomb said. “He has a lot of experience behind him and has a lot of time to prepare a wicket that, I think, will produce a good Boxing Day Test.”It’s tough and he’s under the microscope at the moment through the media. He’s a great groundsman, has been for a lot of years, has worked in some different conditions and has done some great things out here.”Marsh added: “He’ll learn from this mistake and I’m sure the wicket for Boxing Day will be good.”While there will be attempts to reschedule the match, with such a packed season – and this being the last round of matches before the BBL – that is likely to prove difficult. If the game isn’t replayed then, under Cricket Australia rules, each side will get three points. Marsh said Western Australia would “let the dust settle” before assessing their options in that scenario.

Full player list revealed for The Hundred draft

Only 19 of more than 300 domestic players in the draft have stipulated a reserve price

English players have been conservative in their salary demands ahead of Sunday’s inaugural draft for The Hundred, with only 19 of the 331 domestic players choosing to put down a reserve price. While many of the big overseas names in the draft have opted for a base price of £100,000 or more, meaning they will have to be picked in the first four rounds if at all, only four English players – Joe Denly, Liam Livingstone, Samit Patel and Mark Wood – have dared to enter with a reserve price as high as £60,000.Seven players – Ian Bell, Sam Billings, Morne Morkel, Liam Plunkett, Delray Rawlins, Olly Stone and Ryan ten Doeschate – have entered with a reserve price of £50,000.Eight more – Kyle Abbott, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Gareth Harte, Richard Levi, Wayne Madsen, Hamidullah Qadri, Rilee Rossouw and Hardus Viljoen – have a reserve price of £40,000, while the rest have none, meaning they could go for as little as £30,000.The vast majority of players with a county deal have put their names forward, meaning there are few notable omissions – though some red-ball specialists like Alastair Cook, Rob Yates and Nick Browne have not entered. Those without a base price that can hope to be picked up relatively early in the draft include Ravi Bopara, Liam Dawson, Cameron Delport, Lewis Gregory, Tymal Mills and Reece Topley, while the overwhelming majority of recent stars in the T20 Blast are on the full list.Several players without a county contract have entered, including recent pros Mohammad Azharullah, Richard Oliver, and Azeem Rafiq. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the overseas player list includes global T20 stars including Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Glenn Maxwell, though AB de Villiers has not registered for the competition.Harbhajan Singh was the only Indian to have initially entered the draft, but had a change of mind and wanted to focus on playing in the IPL. The BCCI made it clear to him that unless he was retired he could not be permitted to play overseas T20 leagues. Some players have moved their reserve prices since ESPNcricinfo revealed an earlier version of the overseas player list. Lungi Ngidi has removed his initial reserve price of £125,000, while Shahid Afridi has changed his down from £100,000 to £60,000.Several more overseas players have registered since then, including Mohammad Amir, Hazratullah Zazai, Umar Akmal and Avishka Fernando. In total, there are now 239 overseas players registered for the draft.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kang, also the majority owner of NWSL side Washington Spirit and European giants Lyon, bought the English second-tier side in December and has shown her commitment to getting the Lionesses into the top-flight with a huge flurry of announcements ahead of the 2024-25 season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The club from the capital have persuaded Precheur to leave French giants PSG to manage in the Championship, off the back of him helping the French giants win just a fifth major honour in the form of the Coupe de France, and added one of the best talents of her generation, in Asllani, to the squad. The Sweden star has 187 caps for her country and has previously represented PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid, before joining London City from AC Milan.

  • WHAT PRECHEUR & ASLLANI SAID

"Since I met Michele last season, I have admired her vision and dedication to the women’s game," Precheur said. "The high-performance culture of winning she is building across her teams was a key part in my decision to join London City. I can’t wait to get started next week and meet the players and team staff."

"I am delighted to be back in England for the second time, now as a London City Lionesses player,” Asllani added. "I can’t wait to put on the No.9 shirt and get to know the team."

Those two arrivals were not the only bits of big news. Kang also revealed that London City has purchased its current training facilities and signed a long-term tenancy agreement with Bromley FC, recently promoted into the men's English Football League, to play their home fixtures at its Hayes Lane ground. "Today marks a new era at London City Lionesses,” Kang said.

Pochettino could drop £29m star after poor showing vs Villa

Chelsea have been one of the biggest spenders in World Football since Todd Boehly took ownership of the club in May 2022.

Since then, the Blues have managed to accrue spending of £1bn on both transfer and loan fees with the hopes of challenging for the Premier League title. This has not yet made much of a difference, as they currently find themselves residing in 11th place.

Last season's results weren't much better either, as Graham Potter's men only managed to get as high as 12th despite massively overhauling their squad.

Although many put this down to the squad needing to gel, their recent performances have left a lot to be desired. For example, in their most recent clash against Aston Villa in the FA Cup, despite coming out on top, a few players could still face the axe ahead of their next clash on Monday evening.

One player in particular is Noni Madueke. The former PSV man joined the club in January 2023 for a fee worth around £29m but since then, he has been in and around the Blues' first-team squad and has played a total of 30 games whilst contributing to six goals.

These statistics aren't the most enthralling and showcase how far off the pace the winger is despite being with the club for over a year now.

Madueke's performance against Villa in numbers

Madueke started the game against Aston Villa but was taken off in the 75th minute. However, before he was taken off, he did manage to create the first goal for the Blues.

That said, according to Sofascore, despite being part of a front three, the winger didn't manage to have a single shot on target. Whereas, Cole Palmer, who was playing as a striker, managed two.

Despite receiving an 8/10 match rating courtesy of Goal, and having a decent game overall, Mauricio Pochettino may be forced to bench the youngster for the foreseeable future.

This is due to no fault of his own, however, the Argentine will be keeping an eye on Christopher Nkunku as he has now returned from injury.

Why Nkunku is likely to replace Madueke

Nkunku was the third-most expensive addition to Chelsea's squad this season, trailing only Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

The attacker had been heavily linked throughout the entirety of the 2022/23 season with a move to west London following an impressive outing in his final campaign for RB Leipzig.

Across all competitions last season, the France international managed to contribute to a total of 32 goals in just 36 games for the German side.

This was by far the attackers' most prolific season and, with his versatility of being able to play anywhere across the front three, he was an invaluable member of the squad.

It's this versatility which makes him an ideal replacement for Madueke, as he can interchange with his fellow attackers if and when needed. Additionally, now could be the ideal time to give the England international a rest as Nkunku has recently returned from injury.

Pivotally, despite playing 11 games fewer than Madueke, the 26-year-old only has three fewer goal contributions.

If he could manage to find his attacking prowess once more, he could become an invaluable member of Pochettino's squad. His addition to the side on Monday against Crystal Palace would also allow Palmer to move to his more natural position on either wing. It's a change the manager should be looking to make if he wants to beat the Eagles.

Amy Jones keeps form rolling as England's top order set up big win, 3-0 series sweep against West Indies

Jones, Sarah Taylor reach half-centuries as Heather Knight’s quick-fire cameo keeps England clinical

The Report by Valkerie Baynes13-Jun-2019
Entertaining batting from Amy Jones and Sarah Taylor led England to a comprehensive 135-run victory over West Indies at Chelmsford and a 3-0 sweep of their ODI series.Jones’s 80 off 83 balls was her fifth half-century in six ODI innings and added to her 91 in the series opener in Leicester, leading to her being named Player of the Match and Player of the Series on her 26th birthday.Jones put her form down to “increasing confidence on the back of some good scores” and hard work on her batting.”I’ve had the backing to open the batting and that’s where I love batting and I feel really comfortable there,” Jones said.It was a rock-solid performance by England’s top order with Tammy Beaumont falling just short of her fifty and Heather Knight putting on a wonderful cameo of 40 runs off just 19 deliveries to lay the foundation for victory in a match reduced to 39 overs per side after a rain delay of nearly two and a half hours in the 11th over of the match.Having won the toss and sent England in, West Indies were simply outplayed again, left with far too much to do chasing a target of 267 revised under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method as England kept the pressure on with the ball and in the field.Bryony Smith, the 21-year-old from Surrey, made her ODI debut having played three T20Is in the tri-series with Australia and India in Mumbai early last year. Usually an opener for her county, Smith was slated to bat at No. 7 and, while her services weren’t needed with the bat, she was amongst the wickets in her eight overs of off-spin, claiming 1 for 20.Kate Cross was the pick of the England bowlers with 2 for 16 off six overs, while Sophie Ecclestone also claimed two.Adding to West Indies’ woes ahead of their three-match T20I series starting against England next week, captain Stafanie Taylor left the ground for scans after injuring her hand while fielding. Britney Cooper – called into the touring party to replace Deandra Dottin, who was a late omission with a shoulder injury – was battling illness throughout this match but she will have the best part of five days to recover before the first match at Northampton on Tuesday. When play resumed after the rain, Jones, unbeaten on 16, and Beaumont, not out 27, really started scoring freely. Beaumont appeared aggrieved at being adjudged lbw to Afy Fletcher on 46 attempting one of several reverse sweeps from the England line-up, suggesting she believed she had got bat on ball. Her dismissal brought Sarah Taylor to the crease and the England wicketkeeper answered some probing questions about her batting that had arisen since her last ODI score of note, a century against South Africa scored a year and a day – or nine innings – ago. Her 70 off 61 deliveries was full of magnificent stroke play, including more reverse sweeps, until she scooped Hayley Matthews to Shamilia Connell at third man.Connell had already taken a sharp catch that flew to her at mid-wicket to dismiss Dani Wyatt, who came in when Jones took on a Matthews short ball and skied it to a diving Cooper at deep mid-wicket.Knight then put on a wonderful display, picking off runs, including two big sixes, to push her side to another daunting total for a West Indies outfit that has struggled all round, but particularly with the bat, so far on this tour. The fact that Kycia Knight’s 38 in this match was their second-highest individual score behind Chedean Nation unbeaten 42 in the series opener put the magnitude of West Indies’ task in perspective.Knight fell to a typically sharp catch behind the stumps to Sarah Taylor when she got a faint outside edge on a Cross delivery and Nation was unhappy in the extreme when she was given out lbw to Ecclestone with replays suggesting there may have been nothing but bat on ball. But it was Fran Wilson – coming into the side with Smith and Jenny Gunn as Nat Sciver, Katherine Brunt and Laura Marsh were rested – who effected the dismissal of the match, if not the series. Diving to her left at cover, Wilson managed to grab the ball whilst horizontal in mid-air to dismiss Matthews off Cross with a catch that was nothing short of spectacular. With Stafanie Taylor unable to bat, West Indies were an important player down and Knight described England’s performance as their best of the series.”We’ve just been really clinical, really ruthless, in what we’ve done and the most pleasing thing is different people have stood up at different times and we’ve just been really professional and it’s really good signs,” Knight said. “Winning’s become a real habit so we just want to keep that going as long as we can.”The win lifted England above Australia at the top of the ICC Women’s Championship standings, although England have played six matches more.

BCCI ombudsman summons Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul

Hearings to take place on April 9 and 10 in the matter related to the pair’s controversial comments on a TV chat show

KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya have a chat after the game•BCCI

Justice DK Jain, the BCCI ombudsman, has issued notices to the pair of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, asking them to be present for hearings in the controversy related to their remarks on an Indian TV chat show recently. The hearings will take place in Mumbai, with Pandya’s scheduled on April 9 and Rahul’s the next day. This is the first issue Justice Jain, who was appointed by the Supreme Court in February, will adjudicate on.Justice Jain told ESPNcricinfo that as part of the process of natural justice, he had to hear both players before adjudicating on the matter.Asked whether the players had confirmed their attendance, Justice Jain said that was not needed, but it was important for him to listen to what they had to say. “I have sent them the notice. It is for them to appear or not,” he said. “It is part of natural justice. You cannot hold someone guilty without having given them the opportunity to present their case.”The timing of the hearings is a concern for the IPL franchises of the two players – Mumbai Indians (Pandya) and Kings XI Punjab (Rahul). Incidentally, Mumbai will host Kings XI in an evening match on April 10, so it remains to be seen whether Rahul will feature in that game.Justice Jain said there was no deadline given to him by the BCCI to take a final decision. However, both the Indian team management as well the national selectors would want clarity keeping in mind the World Cup, the squad for which will be picked around April 25 with the tournament starting on May 30.Both Pandya and Rahul had been suspended by the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators in January over their offensive remarks on the television show ‘Koffee with Karan’, which was aired on January 9. The two players, who were in Australia at the time, were called back home and suspended two days later. Subsequently, on January 24, the suspension was provisionally lifted pending an inquiry.

  • Liverpool now unable to finish first
  • Arsenal in action on Sunday at Manchester United
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Jurgen Klopp's final season at Liverpool will definitely not end with another Premier League crown, as the Reds have seen their dwindling title hopes ended by Manchester City's 4-0 win over Fulham. The victory sends the defending champions to the top of the table on 85 points. Liverpool sit seven points behind with just two games left to play, meaning they can't catch City even if they win their remaining fixtures against Aston Villa and Wolves.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

City's comprehensive win means the pressure is back on Arsenal to respond on Sunday at Old Trafford. Victory for the Gunners over Manchester United will take Mikel Arteta's side back to the summit, one point clear, with just one game left to play for the north London side. However, the destiny of the title is still in City's hands, as Guardiola's men have a game in hand on their title rivals. The match will take place on Tuesday when City head to Arsenal's neighbours Tottenham for a crunch clash.
