In 20 years, they will say 'can we get wages like India?'

I’m nervous to talk about cricket. But if you tell me to come and speak about Jagmohan Dalmiya, I do not know what to say about him because in my mind he was truly one of the finest heroes we have. There are two types of heroes. One is on the field and one is off the field and I think if I have to say about him, if all of us, we cricketers are enjoying [ourselves, it is] thanks to this man. Without him I think we would have been struggling. Already a lot of things have been said about him, I only want to say in the last 50 years in the world, he was the best administrator in all sports. When India used to struggle, we always looked up to England and Australia, and we used to say ‘Can we get wages like Australia, England?’. That was the thought process. In 20 years, all these countries will say, ‘Can we get wages like India?’ and that is the change he did.Sometimes for players it does not really matter when we are on the field, when we play the game. But it is important to get good money. Jagmohan Dalmiya understood that these cricketers have a career of only 10 to 15 years maximum. Everybody is not Sachin Tendulkar, who can play for 24 years. Eight years and 10 years and you give your prime time and what money does in those 15 years of cricket, if you can make the life the same you have today. That tells a lot and that credit goes to my hero. When I met him first, he did not make that much of an impression on me. As I kept on meeting him, I think I had realised that he was not the best of speakers but there was none better than him to understand word by word, full stop to comma, what is right, what is wrong. Nobody has done better contracts than this man. That was his strength. Let’s say, everybody does not have the art of speaking. Some people can write well. But this man was one of those persons who understood where he could nail down other people. The best part is that he kept everybody happy. We cricketers of that 80s batch, the first time we thought that the cricket board came close to the players [was under Dalmiya]. Otherwise the board was far away from the players and players were far away from the board. The players came close to the board. Before that [it was like] might is right. Whatever the board said, nobody could question the cricket control board of India. But Jagmohan Dalmiya said no to that. He said we needed to have dialogue. I think half of the battle was won for the players. The administration was ready to listen to you. He had given the opportunity.Jagmohan Dalmiya at a BCCI special general meeting in Kolkata•Hindustan Times

A lot of administrators have seen and had been there with the board. But for him, love of the game and passion of the game brought the cricketers together. I do not think we had the guts or had any board president invited for a cup of tea or coffee. They used to get orders and that is how it used to run. But he changed for the betterment of the game. I do not know the inside stories of this part of the world. But I’m sure he was instrumental in bringing the cricketers together and the people who bring people together, they are leaders. In my mind, he was the leader to get things done. From there Sourav [Ganguly, the CAB president] asked me do not talk too much about Dalmiya, talk about cricket, but also about Indian cricket. I just want to tell the present Indian cricket team, we always respect players from CK Nayadu to Amarnath to Vinoo Mankad, Hazare, Merchant, Polly Umrigar. From time to time cricket has changed, Tiger Pataudi, Bishen Singh Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar and then another batch came. Sunil Gavaskar, Viswanath, and then another batch came, which was a big change. Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh. During that period I think we got the best cricketers of all time and after that the great Dhoni, Yuvraj and now baton is in your hand, Virat.I think you can take Indian team ahead because you have the responsibility. You are the one people look up to and we look up to you. Take the game to where nobody can imagine. You are a hero and you are like Dalmiya. You can change the things, which you have done this year or last few years is the fitness which I can be proud of. It is required in Indian cricket. Every captain comes out with something new; new thought process, new way of thinking. I think that is more important. We, as cricketers, can say you keep up the good work. We love you all.

Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill will return to the Sydney Sixers for the 2017-18 Big Bash League after five seasons with the Melbourne Renegades. Nevill had been part of the Sixers side that won the inaugural BBL in 2011-12, and will return to the franchise on a multi-year deal.Nevill’s New South Wales team-mate, fast bowler Sean Abbott, has also committed to the Sixers.”It was a great opportunity to be back playing with people that I’ve played with extensively at NSW,” Nevill told “One of my fondest cricket memories was winning the BBL 01 title with the Sixers and I’d love to win another one with the same guys. My best mates play for NSW and the Sixers so the ability to play all season with through, through state and then BBL cricket was a real attraction.”The Sixers have a great environment, given the nucleus is similar to NSW, and I love the culture. Another factor was being able to spend the festive period at home in Sydney.”Nevill played 27 matches for the Renegades over five seasons, scoring 186 runs at an average of 13.28 and a strike rate of 97. Last season, he suffered a fractured jaw after a freak accident during a BBL game against the Adelaide Strikers, where he was struck in the face by Brad Hodge’s bat.In the 2016-17 domestic season, Nevill ended up as one of the top-scorers for NSW in the Sheffield Shield, with 625 runs in nine matches, including three hundreds and a fifty.Nevill has not played for Australia since the Hobart Test against South Africa last year. The innings-and-80-run defeat in that match – which was the side’s fifth consecutive Test loss – forced the Australian selectors to revamp the side and Nevill lost his place to Matthew Wade.

Fulham Make £22m Offer For "Magnificent" Star

Fulham have now made a bid of €25m (£22m) for Benfica defender Morato, who is keen on a move to Craven Cottage this summer, according to a recent report from Maisfutebol.

What's the latest Fulham transfer news?

At the moment, Fulham appear to be bracing for a couple of major departures, with Aleksandar Mitrovic reportedly telling relatives he will never play for the club again, in light of them valuing him at £52m to ward off interest from Al Hilal.

Marco Silva's future is also in doubt, with the manager's agents meeting with representatives of Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli in London, to discuss a potential £40m deal to manage in the Saudi Pro League.

With the future of their star striker and manager up in the air, it is a worrying time for Fulham, however, they still remain active in the transfer market, having recently submitted a bid of £15m for Ajax defender Calvin Bassey.

However, considering the Dutch side paid £20m for the 23-year-old last summer, it seems unlikely they would be willing to part with him for a lower amount, and the Cottagers have now identified Morato as a major target.

That is according to a report from Portuguese outlet Maisfutebol (via Sport Witness), which states that Fulham have now stepped up their interest in the Benfica defender by lodging a "decisive" offer of €25m (£22m) in order to acquire his services.

Silva's side are willing to offer the 22-year-old a significantly-improved salary package, which would nearly quadruple his wages, and the player himself would be keen on a move to Craven Cottage.

The Brazilian has allegedly instructed Benfica to accept the proposal made by the west London club, but Benfica have already turned down four bids in recent days, so it remains to be seen whether £22m is deemed to be a high enough offer.

Who is Morato?

The Francisco Morato-born defender initially made his breakthrough with Sao Paulo, attracting the attention of Benfica, where he has spent the last four seasons, making a total of 50 appearances for the Portuguese club.

However, the 6 foot 3 centre-back has been unable to cement a regular place in the starting XI, making a total of just nine outings in the league last season.

Given that Benfica won the league title last season, it is understandable that the former Sao Paulo man was not able to break into the first team, and he could still be a quality signing for Fulham.

Benfica'sMoratocelebrates scoring their first goal with Goncalo Ramos

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed the Benfica ace as "magnificent", while also claiming he "has everything to become a world-class centre-back."

One of the £8k-per-week defender's best attributes is his passing ability, having averaged a pass-completion rate of 90% over the past year, which places him in the 96th percentile compared to his positional peers playing at a similar level.

It would certainly be a risk for Fulham to sign Morato, given that he only has very limited first-team experience, but he is still very young and he is showing signs that he could go on to be a top player.

Kumble likely to remain coach for WI tour

Anil Kumble will be given an extension in case the cricket advisory committee, appointed to finalise his successor, does not arrive at a final choice before the tour

Nagraj Gollapudi12-Jun-2017The BCCI is likely to retain Anil Kumble as coach for India’s tour of the West Indies immediately after the ongoing Champions Trophy. Kumble will be given the contract extension if the cricket advisory committee (CAC) fails to pick India’s next coach before then. The decision was taken by the Committee of Administrators (CoA), after consulting BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary and chief executive officer Rahul Johri on Monday.”In case there is a delay in taking a decision (by the CAC) we will request Anil Kumble to cover the West Indies tour also,” Vinod Rai, the CoA chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. Rai said the BCCI would check whether Kumble was “happy” to continue until the West Indies tour, which starts on June 23. India are scheduled to travel to the Caribbean from London on June 22, for five ODIs and one T20 international.Kumble was appointed India coach in June last year and was given a one-year contract, which ends after the Champions Trophy. Last month, the BCCI decided to invite fresh applications for the position after being made aware of the players’ reported unhappiness with Kumble’s man-management skills.Kumble was on the shortlist of six candidates and remained the first choice of the CAC, which comprises Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. Though the BCCI was in favour of appointing the new coach on a two-year contract until the 2019 World Cup, the CAC said that it did not want to take a hasty decision. The CAC’s first option, as previously reported, was to try and patch up differences between the India captain Virat Kohli and Kumble.

Fulham: Journalist Shares Major Willian Contract Update

Fulham have made a new contract offer to Brazilian winger Willian in an attempt to ward off interest from Saudi Arabia and Europe, according to reliable journalist Nizaar Kinsella.

Who could join and leave Fulham this summer?

The Whites, after a successful first Premier League campaign back in the top flight, are thoroughly planning for the 2023/2024 season and have earmarked transfer targets.

As per recent reports, it is believed that Gil Vicente striker Fran Navarro is of interest, alongside Man United duo Fred and Harry Maguire. Central midfield is also of priority, especially as star player Joao Palhinha attracts attention from domestic rivals and big clubs abroad.

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a player supporters know well following his 2020/2021 season on loan at Craven Cottage, is apparently being targeted by Marco Silva and co as well.

However, Fulham must also think about the futures of seven players, with a plethora of squad members either returning to their parent clubs from a loan spell or nearing the end of their contracts (Transfermarkt).

Manor Solomon, Cedric Soares, Layvkin Kurzawa, Neeskens Kebano, Anthony Knockaert, Steven Sessegnon and Willian are the players in question, but a report by Kinsella in The Evening Standard claims Fulham have made moves to keep the latter player.

Fulham forward Willian.

Indeed, Kinsella writes that they have made an offer to the 34-year-old to extend his stay by another year, which possesses the option for a further 12 months.

The deal is worth around £50,000-per-week, but there is no agreement yet, as Willian will bide his time and consider his options amid interest from Saudi Arabia and Europe.

The Brazilian's family, though, enjoy living in London and are settled – which could be a big factor. As mentioned in the report, Silva sees keeping Willian as a "priority".

Who is Willian?

The South American veteran, who has totalled 286 Premier League appearances over a glittering career, also has 70 caps for the Brazil national team (Transfermarkt).

As per WhoScored, he was a key player for Fulham over 2022/2023, standing out as their second-best performer overall behind striker Aleksandar Mitrovic with 10 goals contributions (five goals, five assists).

Speaking after a 5-3 thrilling win over Leicester City in May, Silva was effusive in his praise for Willian, calling him a "top, top class" player.

"Very good goals by Willian," said Silva.

"He is top, top class. It is hard to express in words the way he is playing and what he is doing for us this season.”

Man United Place £38m-Rated Player On Wanted List

Manchester United are one of the sides vying to sign Goncalo Inacio, according to a report from O Jogo, via Sport Witness, who claim the player prefers the Red Devils to interest from elsewhere.

Who is Goncalo Inacio?

Despite Sporting's struggles this season – they have finished fourth, their lowest finish since the defender broke into the first-team – Inacio has remained a key figure in the side. He featured in 33 league outings for the club and managed one goal with three assists despite playing in their backline.

His stats this year have also highlighted his talents despite some of his club's failures in the Portugese Liga. When compared with other players in his position in the Men's 'Next 8' competitions (leagues that aren't the Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, La Liga or Serie A), he ranks as one of the best defenders around.

His 9.04 progressive passes per 90 put him in the top one percent of centre-backs and his 1.90 progressive carries put him within the top three percent too. It shows that not only is he solid at the back – as his 1.71 interceptions and 1.48 tackles per 90 suggest – but he is adept at taking the ball himself and being more offensive, starting attacks and dragging his team forward.

goncalo-inacio-sporting-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

It is these showings that have now led to interest from afar. As reported by O Jogo via Sport Witness, there are a few Premier League teams that have an interest in Inacio this summer and they are Newcastle and Man United. With a release clause of 45 million Euros (or £38m), a deal wouldn't break the bank for either club but Sporting remain eager to extend his deal and raise his clause.

It is then stated that he has bristled at the interest from the Magpies but has not had the same reaction when it comes to United, suggesting he is open to joining and even prefers an Old Trafford move.

Should Man United sign Inacio?

Those unfamiliar with the centre-back should know that he is regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in his position. This is showcased by football talent scout Jacek Kulig calling him a "complete" centre-back for example and adding that he is "Alcochete's finest".

His stats, as previously stated, also back this up. He ranks as one of the best in his position amongst a multitude of leagues and players, with not only his offensive work standing out but his defensive output too. With 0.87 dribblers tackled per 90, it puts him within the 85th percentile in that stat and shows he is capable of tracking and stopping runners, and his 5.89 ball recoveries also ranks highly, putting him within the top 26%.

Inacio then is still only young but has already proven that he has a lot of raw talent – and he certainly has what it takes to step up to the bright lights of a club like United, having been praised for his elite psychological traits by his former coaches.

Injured Shaun Marsh and Faulkner out of South Africa tour

Allrounder James Faulkner and batsman Shaun Marsh have both been ruled out of Australia’s one-day tour of South Africa due to injuries. Usman Khawaja has been called into the squad in place of Marsh, while Faulkner will not be replaced in the squad, which as a result will be reduced from 15 men to 14.Marsh suffered a fractured finger during the recent tour of Sri Lanka and while he was initially named in the ODI squad to visit South Africa, further x-rays have encouraged Australia to take a more conservative approach with him. Faulkner suffered a calf strain at Australia’s training session on Thursday, and is expected to be sidelined for up to a month.

“Shaun undertook a follow up x-ray and was reviewed by specialists this week,” David Beakley, the team physio, said. “Unfortunately due to the fracture being in the joint of the finger we have decided to take a more conservative approach, therefore he will not be available for the ODI series in South Africa.”James suffered a low grade calf strain during a fitness session in Sydney today which we expect to take three to four weeks to recover. Unfortunately this means he will also be unavailable for the South Africa series.”Australia’s first ODI in South Africa is against Ireland on September 27, before they begin a five-match series against South Africa on September 30.
