RoI look to halt Vidarbha's charge as Umesh Yadav is ruled out

For last five years, the competition has been slotted at the end of the season. which has meant that the Ranji-winning side has not lost form

The Preview by Sreshth Shah11-Feb-2019Big PictureIn English football, the Community Shield – played between the Premier League winners and the FA Cup winners from the previous season – usually marks the beginning of the new season. The Irani Trophy, named after former BCCI treasurer Zal Irani, was quite like that – played between the Rest of India side and the previous Ranji Trophy winners. From 1965-66 to 2012-13, it was the curtain-raiser for the season that would follow, and fans were given a reminder of the stars from the previous year. But for the last five years, the competition has been slotted at the end of the season. It means that the Ranji-winning side has not lost form waiting for a contest scheduled more than six months later, and for the neutral, the contest has been much more even. In the 15 Irani Trophies contested leading up to the rule-change in 2013, Rest of India lost just twice. Since then, they have won only two times. This year, however, in Ajinkya Rahane, Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari, Rest of India have half of India’s Test batsmen. Throw in Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, and that’s an enviable top order. As a whole, their batsmen are stronger than Vidarbha’s, but with this tie being important for each of them (more on that later), the contest could be much closer than what the XIs suggest.Vidarbha, entering the match as successive Ranji champions, are looking to earn consecutive Irani Trophy triumphs too. In a brutal display of batting prowess last year, they rode on the back of Wasim Jaffer, Ganesh Satish and Apoorv Wankhade to amass 800 for 7, against a bowling unit comprising R Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, Siddarth Kaul, before their pacers did just about enough to bowl out Rest of India and take a trophy-clinching lead. This year’s Rest of India bowlers are more inexperienced, and Vidarbha would look to capitalise on that again.ESPNcricinfo LtdVidarbha, however, will be without their pace spearhead Umesh Yadav, because of a “niggle”, their captain said on Monday. Aditya Sarwate – who dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for 0 and 1 in the Ranji final will be the centre of focus as the bowlers will try to match their batsmen’s performances. The Rest of India bowlers, however, make up for their lack of experience by coming into the match in red-hot form. Between them, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Ankit Rajpoot, Sandeep Warrier and Tanveer-ul-Haq have 195 Ranji Trophy wickets this season.Last year’s competition was indeed a drab affair, but there’s hope this time. The average first-innings score at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur this season is 394, and all three games at the ground this season have produced an outright win. That could get Rest of India excited after last year’s hammering, but they won’t be too pleased knowing that it’s Vidarbha who have won on all three occasions.Form guideVidarbha WWWDW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Rest of India DWWLLIn the spotlightThere will be some eyes on Ajinkya Rahane, who had lukewarm tours of England and Australia. Apart from the fact that MSK Prasad, the chief selector, has said that Rahane is in the running for a World Cup spot, the batsman would be looking to make amends for a season where he threatened without getting the big runs. Iyer and Kishan will have their own goals, with the former visibly slipping away from India reckoning, and the latter losing prominence among India’s growing list of wicketkeeper-batsmen.Aditya Sarwate got the big wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for the second time in the match•PTI Aditya Sarwate will be the man who Rest of India will be most wary of. Not only has the slow left-arm bowler bamboozled batsmen in Nagpur, he’s a fine batsman too. His five-wicket haul and 102 sealed Vidarbha’s spot in the final, where he took 11 wickets and made an important 49 in the second innings to take their lead beyond Saurashtra’s reach. A dominating all-round show against the country’s best players could help him leapfrog into India A reckoning.Team newsVidarbha had a settled XI in the final but will bring in Darshan Nalkande for the injured Umesh Yadav. Akshay Wakhare hadn’t planned on his side to win the Ranji Trophy; he got married on Sunday. Despite his marriage reception scheduled for Wednesday, Wakhare has put those plans on hold and has made himself available for the Irani Trophy match.Vidarbha (probable): 1 Faiz Fazal (capt), 2 R Sanjay, 3 Wasim Jaffer, 4 Ganesh Satish, 5 Mohit Kale, 6 Akshay Wadkar (wk), 7 Aditya Sarwate, 8 Akshay Karnewar, 9 Akshay Wakhare, 10 Darshan Nalkande, 11 Rajneesh GurbaniRest of India have a problem of plenty. A packed middle order of India batsmen may force Rinku Singh and Karnataka seamer Ronit More to miss out. They also have two wicketkeepers, which means Saurashtra’s Snell Patel is likely to be slidelined.Rest of India (probable): 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 Anmolpreet Singh, 3 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 4 Hanuma Vihari, 5 Shreyas Iyer/Rinku Singh, 6 Ishan Kishan (wk), 7 K Gowtham, 8 Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, 9 Tanveer-ul-Haq/Rahul Chahar, 10 Ankit Rajpoot, 11 Sandeep WarrierPitch and conditionsWarm, sunny conditions are expected on all five days. The surface in Nagpur has been result-friendly since last year’s Irani Trophy. Teams would prefer batting first and wearing the pitch down, especially since both sides have quality spinners. This season, spinners have taken 67 out of 99 wickets at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur .Stats and trivia Rest of India are chasing their 29th win, while Vidarbha are looking to become only the third Ranji winners in history to also defend their Irani Trophy title Wasim Jaffer will be appearing in his eighth Irani Trophy match. His 286 last year is the highest individual score of the competition Sarwate (61) needs 10 wickets to finish with the most scalps for the first-class seasonQuotes”Irani Trophy is very important for getting noticed. I earned my India cap after a hundred in this competition, and it was the same for Jaffer too”
“We respect Vidarbha, they are a very good team. They’ve done very well, winning back to back is not easy. But for us, it’s all about playing good cricket and fair cricket”

Kemar Roach claims the day as England are left stunned by West Indies

Eighteen wickets fall on thrilling second day of first Test with West Indies in control against England

The Report by Valkerie Baynes24-Jan-2019West Indies 127 for 6 (Dowrich 27*, Holder 7*) lead England 77 (Jennings 17, Roach 5-17) by 339 runs
England were entitled to stride off the Kensington Oval after less than an hour’s play on day two with their chests thrust forward and grins on their faces, a job well done. They had, after all, restricted West Indies to a total of 289 on a pitch both captains wanted to bat on first.Three and a half hours later, the entrance to the field had become a dizzying turnstile for touring batsmen with shoulders hunched and jaws slack, trying to fathom what had just happened. What had just happened was an absolute demolition job as West Indies’ pace attack, led by Kemar Roach, bowled England out for 77, the lowest Test total to be posted in Bridgetown and 212 runs short of the home side’s modest first-innings score.Roach’s stunning spell of five wickets for four runs in 27 balls left England reeling at 48 for 6 and, with Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph contributing two wickets apiece, the scene ended in carnage for the tourists, who had only four batsmen reach double figures with none of them making it to 20.On a day when 18 wickets fell, however, there was much more to come as England’s Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali combined to put West Indies under some pressure at 61-5.Shimron Hetmyer, West Indies’ top-scorer with 81 in the first innings, threatened to steady the second with Shane Dowrich, until Hetmyer fell for 31 late on a spectacular day of action.Dowrich remained unbeaten on 27 at the close along with Holder (7 not out) as the West Indies held a lead of 339.After James Anderson had claimed 5 for 46 to move level with Ian Botham’s record of 27 five-wicket hauls for England, and Stokes’ 4 for 59, England looked to be in a comfortable position at the end of the West Indies’ first innings. Then came Holder and Roach.West Indies captain Holder had Keaton Jennings caught cheaply, slicing a drive straight to gully to send England to lunch at 30-1.At the resumption, Roach cut loose. He flummoxed Rory Burns and Jonny Bairstow, forcing both to chop onto their stumps. At the other end, Joe Root was lbw for 4.Roach then claimed the wickets of Stokes and Moeen with consecutive balls. First to go was Stokes with an lbw that withstood England’s review. But when Roach caught Moeen on the hop with a blazing short ball next delivery that found a thick top edge, Joseph was there, on the boundary at fine leg, to pluck the catch from mid-air and add to the day’s spectacle in thrilling fashion.By the time Roach had Jos Buttler caught behind by Dowrich off a short, sharp delivery it seemed as though mere moments had punctuated the West Indies quick’s haul and, in the scheme of things, they had.Joseph combined with Dowrich to dismiss Ben Foakes for just 2, while Sam Curran was bounced out, caught by Shai Hope off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel, before Adil Rashid was last to fall. While the day belonged to Roach, Moeen and Stokes added intrigue where no more was needed. As in the first innings, West Indies’ batsmen have so far failed to build on starts, with openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell falling early and Darren Bravo making a forgettable return to Tests after two years by adding just 1 to his first-innings total of 2.At stumps Moeen had 3 for 41 off 12 overs and Stokes 2 for 31 off 11.A talking point before the match was West Indies’ decision to pick just one spinner and four quicks, while England opted for two slow bowlers and left out Stuart Broad. Given the success of the home side’s fast bowlers, selection must remain at the forefront of England’s analysis.Anderson added Joseph’s wicket to his four from day one and Stokes ended West Indies’ first innings with the wicket of Hetmyer but, by the time Hetmyer fell again, caught by Buttler off the bowling of Curran, who had edged Broad out of the team, all that seemed so long ago.

David Warner ready for final leg of ban as BPL stint closes in

David Warner entered the press conference room several minutes before the scheduled start. He chatted with the journalists in the front row, sharing his knowledge about Aminul Islam, the former Bangladesh captain who resides in Australia, whom he knows by his nickname Bulbul.Warner is one of several big names in this season’s BPL, here because of his ban from Australian cricket till March this year. The BPL is his third T20 franchise tournament since he picked up the ban after Global T20 Canada and the CPL, while he has also spent time playing grade cricket back home.”Life has been good for me,” Warner said about his forced break from the international arena. “I have been spending time with the family. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I was sitting in the sidelines. It is about getting the best out of myself and growing as a human being. The most important thing was being a father and husband at home. Now it is down to playing cricket again and making sure I get Sylhet Sixers on top of the table.”Warner said that he has been in good form in Sydney grade cricket, which will help him build towards a comeback in a couple of months when he completes serving the ban.”I was having a conversation with Waqar [Younis, Sylhet coach] today about playing club cricket in Australia at the moment. The wickets are quite low and slow. It has been tough to adapt to those conditions but I have had a very good run of form at home and having played here in Dhaka and Chattogram before, I know what the wicket is going to be like. So for me it is about getting into a routine and rhythm and making sure I can lead from the front, from the top. So it makes it easy for the guys coming in,” he said.Leading Sylhet will also be an interesting opportunity for Warner. He is in charge of the likes of Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Taskin Ahmed and Afif Hossain, all of whom are regarded as some of the most talented cricketers in Bangladesh, often distracted by off-field factors.”I am extremely grateful to be leading the side. For me it is about making sure that we as a whole, including the support staff and management, can get the best out of the players. We have to establish our best XI when we get into the park and make sure we do the right things in training. I have to make sure I am doing my job right, which is scoring runs and leading the guys on the park,” he said. He, however, played down the duel with Steven Smith, who will be on opposite side for Comilla Victorians on Sunday.”I will just treat it as another game. It is not just taking on one player but taking on a team of eleven players. It is about making sure that our bowlers know how to get Smith out, and then tackle the rest of the guys,” he said.Warner said that his own form in the BPL could play a part in his return for Australia. “It is up to the selectors whether or not they want to pick me. At the end of the day, all I can do is score runs in this tournament and the IPL, keep putting my hand up and making sure that I am the best person I can be,” he said.Younis said that he is depending on Warner, apart from overseas fast bowlers Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Irfan and Pat Brown, and legspinners Imran Tahir and Sandeep Lamichhane.”I think we picked a pretty balanced team. We have all bases covered. We have a good bowling line-up with couple of really good overseas fast bowlers and legspinners. Sandeep Lamichhane and Imran Tahir are both world-class. Warner will lead the team from the front. I have worked with him in the past and we get on really well. Hopefully we will challenge other teams in this tournament and play really well,” he said.

Liverpool drew with United in wild gameQuansah gave ball away cheaply before Bruno Fernandes goalVan Dijk sorely disappointed WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool were forced to settle for a point against United despite a dominant display that saw them have 28 shots compared to the hosts' nine. Luis Diaz gave the Reds the lead early on before Bruno Fernandes capitalised on a Quansah giveaway in spectacular fashion to score from the centre circle. A superb Kobbie Mainoo strike then gave United a shock lead, before a late Mohamed Salah penalty rescued a point for the Reds. Van Dijk, though, was far from satisfied.

Liverpool are fighting tooth and nail for the Premier League title and the draw leaves them level on points with leaders Arsenal and second on goal difference. They are also one point ahead of third-placed Manchester City, and Van Dijk believes the Reds have dropped points.

WHAT VAN DIJK SAID

Van Dijk told BBC MOTD: "It feels like a loss, it is our fault again. We had so many chances and we should finish the game off. Unfortunately the individual mistake that happened with the equaliser and we had so much time to put it right, but we were in a rush. Still after being 2-1 down we created so much."

He added: "We should have been 2-0 up at least, but in football unfortunately if these things don't happen you give them the feeling they could come back and it happened."

Asked about whether Quansah will be affected by his error, he replied: "He shouldn't. Mistakes happen in football everyone who has a career in football makes mistakes you can only learn from it."

Explained: Why Matt Turner got booked for Nottingham Forest against Fulham despite not leaving subs' bench with USMNT goalkeeper shouting 'f*** off' after decision

  • Turner on bench against Fulham
  • USMNT keeper booked for kicking ball away
  • Forest pick up vital win
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Turner was once again named on the bench by manager Nuno Espirito Santo as January signing Matz Sels took his place in the Forest goal. That didn't stop the USMNT star getting stuck into the action, though, as he intervened to stop Fulham restarting play quickly in the second half. Despite never actually coming onto the field of play, Turner was booked by the referee.

    THE EXPLANATION

Despite not technically coming off the bench, Turner left his seat at the City Ground to kick a second ball back into play, thus stopping Fulham from restarting the game quickly. That deliberate act of gamesmanship is deemed a bookable offence and so the referee showed the yellow. Per reporter Dom Smith, the USMNT keeper responded to that decision with a shout of "f*ck off" in the official's direction.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fulham were chasing the game at the point after a scintillating first-half display from Forest. Goals from Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White put Espirito Santo's side into a dominant 3-0 lead, with a Tosin Adarabioyo effort shortly after the break not enough for the visitors. Turner's USMNT team-mate Gio Reyna even made a brief cameo for the home side as Forest saw out a vital win for their Premier League survival.

    WHAT NEXT FOR FOREST?

That 3-1 win sees Forest climb three points away from the relegation zone and into 17th, just a point off Everton in 16th who got a respectable 1-1 draw away at Newcastle at the same time. Despite having an inferior goal difference Luton could move level on points with Forest if they win on Wednesday, although they face a tough test against title challengers Arsenal away from home.

Man City: Sky Blues now want to sign “potential world beater” for Guardiola

Manchester City are believed to be keen on a mouthwatering transfer involving one of the brightest talents in all of world football, according to reports.

Man City news: Brighton victory, De Bruyne update, Phillips transfer news

On Saturday, City recorded a deserved 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium as goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland cancelled out a reply from the visitors courtesy of Ansu Fati. Speaking in the aftermath of their triumph, Citizens boss Pep Guardiola afforded special praise to Belgian winger Jeremy Doku for his role in securing all three points, stating:

"After the West Ham game he didn’t play one or two (games) because of doubts he has to play game, game, game and he is not used to it. He is an exceptional winger.

"Jeremy is so smart in defensive areas and after, he has the quality. He got to the byline and got us the first goal and there were many actions. It’s the start of many years for him in this house."

In other news, a Kevin De Bruyne update from Football Insider claims that the midfielder could be made to wait for a new deal at the Etihad Stadium as concerns continue to mount regarding his injury record. The Belgium international is expected to be out until the New Year with a hamstring issue and there is reportedly "no urgency" from the Premier League champions to sit down for talks over a contract renewal, despite the fact that his current deal expires in the summer of 2025.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has issued a Kalvin Phillips update on the future of the midfielder, saying: "Understand both City and player side consider Kalvin Phillips’ January exit ‘very likely’ at this point. Kalvin will still fight to play as much as possible in the next two months but his plan is to be regular starter elsewhere in 2024."

Man City transfer update – Jamal Musiala

According to a Man City transfer update from Football Insider, it is believed that the Citizens are now exploring a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala, who also has interest in his services from Liverpool amid frustrations with his playing time under Thomas Tuchel.

One recruitment figure close to the situation has described the Germany international as a "potential world beater" to the outlet as his stock continues to rise at the Allianz Arena.

Champions League winner Musiala has managed to feature nine times in all competitions for Bayern Munich across all competitions this term, registering one goal and three assists in the process (Musiala statistics – Transfermarkt).

Maintaining an average WhoScored match rating of 7.06/10 for his exploits in the Bundesliga this campaign, Musiala is an extremely bright young player who could add another layer of elite quality to the Citizens' star-studded side.

Spirited Australia can't mask batting frailties as Moeen Ali spins England to victory

England put their recent indignities behind them to steal a march in the first ODI at The Kia Oval

The Report by Andrew Miller13-Jun-20181:56

Social story: England take the series lead

England 218 for 7 (Morgan 69, Root 50) beat Australia 214 (Maxwell 62, Plunkett 3-42 Moeen 3-43) by three wickets
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThey were handing out sandpaper boundary placards on the way up from Vauxhall Tube Station, but in the end, nothing could smooth away the rough edges in Australia’s new-look batting line-up. Despite their rookie bowling attack mounting a spirited defence of a substandard target of 215, England overcame a double dose of jitters to seal a three-wicket victory in the first ODI at The Kia Oval. Most of the pre-series focus had, rightly, been on the absence of Australia’s finest two batsmen, David Warner and Steven Smith, and, as might have been expected, they struggled to mitigate for that void in class. After winning the toss on a bright afternoon in South London, Australia mustered 214 in 47 overs, the sort of slow-death innings that exposed their shortcomings more comprehensively than a full-on batting collapse could have done.Nevertheless, England aren’t without a few notable embarrassments in their (very) recent history, and only days after failing to close out a chase of 372 to hand Scotland a famous victory, they came improbably close to stumbling in pursuit of a target of barely half that height. The beanpole seamer Billy Stanlake was the catalyst for Australia’s defiance, bowling Jason Roy second-ball for a duck as England slipped to 38 for 3 at the top of their innings, before Andrew Tye and his illegible T20 variations came to the fore in the tense closing stages. In the end it was left to David Willey to haul England over the line with an improbably grindy knock of 35 from 41 balls, with Liam Plunkett unbowed for the second match running on 3. But even then, England still won with a handsome 36 deliveries to spare, which spoke to the gulf in batting quality more eloquently than the official margin of victory. That was largely a testament to the elder-statesman class of Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. Their fourth-wicket stand of 115 in 21 overs managed to combine defensive accumulation with calculated aggression in a manner that Australia’s own middle order had been unable to replicate. Without such knowhow to rescue their innings, England really would have been in the soup. But then again, that is the entire point of experience. Before the start of play, Tim Paine had seemed visibly excited at the prospect of ending all the talk of sledging and cheating, and getting back to the day job. But, by the innings break, the captain who had instigated a pre-match handshake with his opponents to mark the start of a new era for his team might have been wondering if he was really that keen to starting talking about actual cricket once again. The early exchanges of Australia’s innings amounted to a vivisection of the tourists’ anxieties in overseas conditions. Willey’s prodigious new-ball swing accounted for Travis Head via a flat-footed slash to slip from his second delivery, before Moeen Ali came whirling through the middle overs, putting his miserable winter behind him with single-spell figures of 10-1-43-3 that might have been lifted straight out of the 1997 Texaco Trophy.Four balls into Moeen’s spell, Aaron Finch gave himself room outside off to pick out short third man with an ambitious wipe. Two balls into his second over, Shaun Marsh stayed leg-side of a well-flighted tweaker, a la Ben Duckett in Bangladesh, and lost his off stump for 24. And when Paine himself, desperate to set a tempo, any tempo, offered catching practice to short third man with a muffed reverse sweep, Moeen’s figures were 3 for 11 in 4.1 overs. After that, it was a given that he’d bowl his spell straight through. Adil Rashid kept him company for a six-over burst of his own, in which time he scalped Marcus Stoinis for 22, before Glenn Maxwell rode to the rescue of his team’s dignity, if not the overall match situation. A restorative 84-run stand for the sixth wicket ended when Plunkett induced a top-edged a pull to deep square leg, and when Ashton Agar misread the length of a Rashid legbreak to be plumb lbw for 40, the tail were rounded up meekly. But there was nothing meek about the response of Stanlake in particular. In the absence of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, this was his chance to demonstrate the timeless virtues of hitting a good length at 90mph. Roy survived one ball before losing the top of his off stump to a beautiful nipbacker, and when the debutant Michael Neser made it two wicket-maidens in the space of four overs by pinning Alex Hales on leg stump, the game was officially afoot.Jonny Bairstow, with three ODI hundreds in as many innings, once again looked a different class in easing to 28 from 22 balls with six outstanding boundaries. But then he nailed a pull straight into the hands of the lone man at square leg to give Kane Richardson his breakthrough, and England faced a test of their ego at 38 for 3.But Root and Morgan swallowed their pride and ate up the overs with deft sweeps, well-placed drives and sharp judgement of the quick singles. By the 29th over, they were 153 for 3 and cruising; three overs later, they’d lost both of their set batsman plus the dangerous Jos Buttler as well, who may be in some of the best form of his life, but today read Tye’s knuckle ball as if it was a Jaipur railway timetable. He had already been dropped off Stanlake – a swirling chance to Paine behind the stumps, who spilled it as his elbows hit the ground – when he scuffed a drive to mid-off.Moeen, determined to carry on playing his way despite criticism of his dismissal at the Grange, looked to have the chase in hand when he holed out to deep midwicket to give Neser his second and ignite that debate all over again. But in the end, he’d already done enough with the ball to ensure that England’s wobbles would not be terminal.

Man United must unleash £43m "game-changer" in new role

Manchester United endured something of a rollercoaster of emotions on Sunday afternoon after slipping to a last-gasp defeat to Premier League rivals Arsenal, with goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus in added time helping to secure a 3-1 victory for Mikel Arteta's side.

The outcome of that thrilling contest could, however, have been far different had Alejandro Garnacho's 88th-minute strike not been ruled out for what was an agonisingly tight offside call, with it looking at the time as if United had pulled off a remarkable smash and grab at the Emirates.

Alas, the goal was chalked off and a mad finale soon ensued, although Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag will likely still have been impressed by the composed nature of the teenager's finish, with the aim now likely to try and find a starting berth for the 19-year-old once the international break is at an end.

How did Garnacho perform against Arsenal?

While the former Atletico Madrid ace was introduced off the bench with just a matter of minutes left to play at the weekend amid United's search for a winner, it is testament to his impact as a "game-changer" – as described by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – that he was able to make his mark just moments later, albeit with the goal not ultimately standing.

Alejandro Garnacho

As Luckhurst noted in his post-match player ratings piece for MEN, the 5 foot 11 forward 'took his chance superbly' as he calmly slotted the ball past a sprawling Aaron Ramsdale, with that attempt an indication that the youngster is hoping to build on his tally of ten goals and assists in what was a breakthrough campaign last time out.

The issue at present is, however, that a starting role in the side looks hard to come by for the Madrid native, with Marcus Rashford's preference for playing off the left flank ensuring that Garnacho may have to play second fiddle to the Englishman in that wide berth.

That being said, however, with United having ended the game with Garnacho, Rashford and summer signing Rasmus Hojlund as an attacking triumvirate, Ten Hag must surely be seeking a way to persist with that front line moving forward, hence why slotting the teen speedster on the right flank could be the perfect solution.

Can Garnacho play on the right wing?

Although the £43m-rated wizard has typically lined up on the left during his embryonic senior career to date, he has also been deployed on the opposite flank throughout his time in the youth set-up on occasion, scoring four goals and providing four assists in just eight outings in that position in total.

With Rashford – who scored 30 goals last term – arguably the main man in attack, it is no doubt fair for Garnacho to be the player who is forced to shift role in the attacking unit, with the aim of ousting the struggling Antony.

The latter man has been a firm favourite of Ten Hag after signing from Ajax on an £86m deal last summer, although that continued faith in the 23-year-old from the Dutchman appears to be rather underserved, with the mercurial winger scoring just eight goals in 48 games for the club to date.

The Brazil international has also failed to fire so far this term after failing to provide a solitary goal or assist in the top flight this season, with it difficult to see the wisdom in persisting with such an unreliable asset.

Diogo Dalot

There may be concerns over seeing Garnacho feature in what would be something of a new role, although the case of Diogo Dalot can be a reason for positivity, with the Portugal international having shone after being utilised as an unorthodox left-back option at the weekend.

A right-back by trade, the 24-year-old has been tasked with filling the void of the stricken Luke Shaw in recent games and – his sliding attempt to try and deny Jesus at the death aside – the former Porto ace was largely rather impressive up against the lively Bukayo Saka, having "defended really well" – according to club legend Gary Neville.

With Ten Hag having seen the benefits of making that albeit enforced tactical tweak, perhaps the 53-year-old can do the same by utilising Garnacho on the right flank once play resumes later this month.
