Journalist shares more details on Liverpool star’s rumoured new contract

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has recently entered talks regarding a new long-term contract, and a reliable journalist has now revealed the time frame in which it’s likely to be signed.

How old is Alexander-Arnold and how many matches has he played?

Alexander-Arnold is now 24 years of age and has been at the club ever since his childhood days having graduated from the academy in 2016 to become a regular feature of the first-team, where he’s so far made a total of 277 senior appearances to date.

The England international has recently been rewarded for his service by being named vice-captain by Jurgen Klopp, and his leadership qualities alongside his high standard of performances have seen him attracting interest from high-profile clubs overseas.

According to 90min, Barcelona and Real Madrid are admirers of the right-back, and it’s this outside attention that has forced FSG into taking the necessary steps to secure his long-term future on Merseyside which is exactly what they have done.

Football Insider have claimed that the two parties have reached an agreement in principle for their homegrown talent to extend his stay in the Premier League, and a club correspondent has now delivered an update as to when supporters could see the deal getting finalised.

Is Trent Alexander-Arnold signing a new contract at Liverpool?

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside’s Daily Briefing, Liverpool reporter Neil Jones confirmed that Liverpool are aiming to announce Alexander-Arnold's new contract by the end of December. He said:

I would expect Liverpool to get Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation sorted by the end of the year. He is into the final two years of his current deal, and there is absolutely no doubting his importance to Liverpool’s long-term plans.

"He is already the creative fulcrum of the side, and his promotion to vice-captain in the summer tells you everything you need to know about his standing off the pitch. He’s one of the club’s key players, and one who has huge significance given he’s come through the academy.

“I don’t expect any hiccups in negotiations. Alexander-Arnold wants to stay and Liverpool want to keep him. There will be a lot of clubs hoping something goes wrong, but I don’t see it. Trent’s future lies at Anfield.”

How many assists does Alexander-Arnold have?

During his 277 senior appearances for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has posted 89 goal contributions (73 assists and 16 goals), showing how much he loves using his pace to burst down the flank, dribble past his marker and create chances for himself and his teammates in the final third.

The PLG client, who already earns £180k-per-week, has carried that impressive form into this season as he’s so far whipped a total of 16 crosses into the opposition’s box, which is the third-highest total throughout the squad, behind Andrew Robertson who is top on 38 and Dominik Szoboszlai in second on 17, via FBRef.

Klopp’s “genius”, as hailed by Jones himself, has also played a huge part in the club’s success over the years having helped to secure seven trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, so Alexander-Arnold signing an improved deal would be nothing less than he deserves.

Paul Mullin told Championship football & Wales call-up is realistic without him having to leave Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney project at Wrexham

Wales have looked at prolific strikerStill waiting on a first capLooking to climb divisions with Red DragonsWHAT HAPPENED?

The clock is ticking for the prolific frontman and his efforts to break into the senior Wales squad, with his 30th birthday set to be celebrated in November. Rob Page has admitted to monitoring Mullin’s progress, as he sits on 95 goals for Wrexham, but he has been playing in the National League and League Two.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT TRUNDLE SAID ABOUT MULLIN

Quizzed on whether Mullin will get a chance with Wales while at SToK Racecourse, former Red Dragons striker Lee Trundle has told the podcast: “I love Mulls and I think he's a great player. What gets me a little bit is people try and question your ability by saying ‘Oh, well you're only playing at that level’. If Mulls went up and played in the Championship in the right team, I think he would still score goals. The thing now is about this Wales call up and people are saying there’s people ahead of him. Even if you go into the National League, he’s scored that many goals, and he’s scored them consistently. If I was the manager of Wales, I would definitely have him in the squad, 100 per cent.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pressed further on whether Mullin may require a transfer to a club in the Championship in order to hit his ultimate targets, Trundle added: “I think that he can go and play at that level, and I'm hoping that will be with Wrexham. He's found himself in a situation the same as I did at Swansea, where you go to a club that just fits you and everything works around you. If Mulls went up the leagues with Wrexham, he'd do exactly the same and score exactly the same goals.”

Mullin netted a hat-trick in his last appearance, against Accrington Stanley, and is up to 16 goals for the season after recently spending time on the bench. He has another promotion party in his sights, with Wrexham currently sat third in League Two with 11 games left to take in.

Leeds: Daniel Farke now eyeing cost-effective left-back solution

Leeds United could now find a cost-effective solution to their left-back issue despite the transfer window being closed at Elland Road, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

News Leeds United signing Ethan Ampadu has made a significant impact at Elland Road since arriving from Chelsea in the summer and has been voted Socios Player of the Month.

Speaking to the Whites' official website, the Wales international expressed his delight at winning the award and how he has started life in Yorkshire, stating: "It was never my aim to come here and win awards, it was more to settle in and see how I could help the team. I really appreciate the fans for all of their support and hopefully by them voting for me, it shows I'm going someway to repaying them for that support and I hope to do even more. Everyone here, the staff, players and all the fans, have made it really easy for me to settle in, so it's been an easy and smooth transition and I've really enjoyed it."

Leeds United have taken just five points from their opening six matches in the Sky Bet Championship so far and face a tough test away to adversaries Millwall on Sunday at The Den.

Former player Paul Robinson has indicated that their encounter against Millwall is a game that Daniel Farke needs to win, stating to MOT Leeds News: “But, it’s always difficult – a game at 12 o’clock on a Sunday after the international break, it’s not an ideal time, but it’s a game that Leeds will need to win. Farke’s job is not in question yet. I mean, yes, they’ve had an indifferent start to the season, but there are reasons as to why: injuries, him coming in late, etcetera, et cetera. If they’re still in 15th in the next international break then there’ll be questions asked. That’s just the nature of the beast, unfortunately.”

As per a recent report from The Athletic, Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers contemplated making a bid for Leeds United ace Jamie Shackleton in the summer; however, no move materialised to try and prize the 23-year-old away from Elland Road in the end.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Leeds United's left-back situation?

Journalist Jacobs has indicated that Farke could be willing to enter the market for a left-back after recent injury problems concerning Junior Firpo.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs stated: "I don't expect Leeds to panic sign and get cover for cover's sake. But it's obvious to anyone who looks at what Leeds have got on paper that they still need to strengthen in that left-back position. So, if a free agent becomes available, they'll move because it's relatively low-risk and cost-effective. But right now, I just don't think there are that many targets that are right for Leeds. There's no point in just adding an extra body for the sake of it if they're not going to benefit the football team. So, the left-back position is Firpo’s and Leeds will just be praying that he stays fit."

Leeds United's Junior Firpo

Firpo looks to be closing in on a return to first-team action in the near future; however, it is unclear if he will be available for selection against Millwall this weekend.

As per Leeds Live, Whites boss Farke has confirmed that both Firpo and Sam Byram, who has deputised at left-back this term, are on the verge of re-entering the first-team fold, stating earlier this month: "I also have to say we've got Junior Firpo, we've got Sam Byram who was outstanding there (at left-back). So I hope both will be back on the other end of the International break at least. "It looks good with the rehab of both of them."

Leeds United fans will be desperate for both to return and will hope their side can climb the Sky Bet Championship table following a frustrating start to 2023/24.

SA likely to persist with extra batsman

A lack of big contributions from the line-up, a strong Australian attack and surfaces that are expected to be drier and more abrasive than usual may force the hosts to avoid thinking about a fourth fast bowler

Firdose Moonda07-Mar-2018South Africa are likely to keep their combination of seven batsmen for the second Test against Australia which starts on Friday. Though they had opted for a fourth fast bowler at the expense of a batsman in the previous series against India, a lack of big contributions from their line-up, a strong Australian bowling attack and surfaces that are expected to be drier and more abrasive than usual have forced the hosts to rethink their approach.St George’s Park is traditionally the slowest surface out of the big Test venues in South Africa, and is generally where spinners find some success. It is also where reverse swing has been a factor in the past and, with Mitchell Starc showing how effectively he could make use of that in Durban, the need for an extra batsman is apparent. “When you look at the nature of the pitch and the Aussie line-up, you feel like you need an extra batter,” coach Ottis Gibson said. “We bowled them out twice but we weren’t able to get enough runs, especially in the first innings. You can’t bat that badly in your first innings against a top team like Australia and expect to win the Test match. Even though we gave ourselves a chance of winning in the end, the poor batting in the first innings really cost us.”After being shot out for 162, with the big names not performing and the lower order collapsing, South Africa were behind the game from day two. Gibson said they simply had to “bat better” as the series moves on and the second innings in Durban showed they are capable of doing so. Aiden Markram led the resistance with a career-best 143, Theunis de Bruyn boshed an aggressive 36 and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock returned to form with a stubborn 83.With the places of seniors Dean Elgar, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis secure, South Africa could go in with the same line-up, however they may give consideration to reserve batsman Temba Bavuma, if he has recovered from injury. Bavuma suffered a broken finger earlier in the year and has not played franchise cricket since January 17. He featured in a club match in a fitness test of sorts before this series, but was ruled out of Durban because he was not fully recovered.Gibson revealed Bavuma may be able to play in Port Elizabeth, but did not say at whose expense. “Temba is being assessed by medical staff. Last week he felt he wasn’t 100%. He’s had an extra week now and is hitting more balls in the nets. Hopefully he’ll be closer to playing.”Similarly, the extra quick in the squad, Lungi Ngidi may have to wait a little longer for his turn after an impressive debut against India. South Africa’s struggles to nip out the Australian tail has led to some calls for Ngidi to play but Gibson has faith in the current pack to do the job. “With regards to the lower-order bowling, they have got Starc and you’ve seen how he has bowled to our tail. He has been aggressive but he’s also pitched the ball up and hit the stumps. We have Rabada, even Keshav bowled well. We’ve got to find a way to get the tail out and it might be with the spinner coming into it to try and disrupt their tail that way.”

Tottenham Leading The Race For "Outstanding" £197k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, but they are now at risk of missing out on him, a report has revealed.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

Spurs have looked solid at the back in the Premier League so far this season, keeping clean sheets in their last two games, but they are still scouring the market for reinforcements in defence, having recently opened talks over a move for Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo.

In a recent report, it has been revealed that Eric Dier could be used as a makeweight in negotiations for the 25-year-old, given that he has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, with Fulham keen on signing him.

Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba has also been targeted by the Lilywhites, but the Bundesliga club's asking price of £50m is proving to be prohibitive, and they have now cooled their interest, however, Postecoglou still has some other options in mind.

Lenglet has also been a target for Spurs for much of the summer, with it previously being reported the defender had agreed a move to north London, and there has now been an update on whether he could still join.

Is Clement Lenglet signing for Tottenham?

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are at the front of the queue for the Frenchman, following his loan spell last season, although Daniel Levy and co may have to move quickly if they are to get a deal over the line.

Although he is "looking for a way out" of Barcelona, the 28-year-old is growing frustrated by the lack of movement from his potential suitors, and he is now considering Saudi Arabia as a destination.

Barca are desperate to get rid of the centre-back, but his high wage packet has proven to be prohibitive all summer, as he is currently tied down to a £197k-per-week contract at the Camp Nou.

At the moment, Spurs' interest is "pending", but with Saudi Arabia now becoming a serious option, they will have to make their move sooner rather than later.

Tottenham still appear to be unwilling to make a concrete move for the France international, perhaps in light of his huge wage demands, but if they are able to get a deal over the line, there is evidence that he could be a solid back-up option for Postecoglou.

During his time on loan in north London last season, the former Lyon man was lauded as "outstanding" by members of the media, and he has a wealth of experience at the highest level, making 160 appearances for Barca, and 50 in the Champions League.

clement-lenglet

That said, Lenglet was unable to reach the heights expected of him in the 2022-23 campaign, averaging a SofaScore match rating of just 6.65 in the Premier League, the 20th-highest figure in an underachieving squad.

As such, Spurs may be better off instead pursuing a move for Adarabioyo, given that the 25-year-old performed far better in the Premier League last season, and he could be available in a swap deal, which would allow Postecoglou to get Dier off the wage bill in the process.

Aston Villa Eyeing Up Emery Swoop For £30m "Beast"

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their plans to make further additions to the playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Aston Villa transfer news?

According to The Mirror, the Villans are one of a number of clubs eyeing up Manchester City central defender Aymeric Laporte as he looks set for a move away from The Etihad.

The report claims that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the Spain international's situation. However, Pep Guardiola's side would prefer to sell him to a foreign team if possible.

It is stated that the Cityzens are willing to cash in on the former Athletic Bilbao star following the signing of Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig for £77m. The Croatia international's arrival has opened the door for the left-footed ace to depart and a fee of £30m is said to be enough to secure his services.

How good is Aymeric Laporte?

Despite having fallen down the pecking order under Guardiola of late, Laporte remains an outstanding central defender who would be a phenomenal addition to the Villa squad.

The 29-year-old Rolls-Royce has proven himself to be an excellent Premier League performer who could be Unai Emery's next Thiago Silva.

Laporte, who was once dubbed "incredible" by Guardiola, would arrive as a serial winner who knows exactly what it takes to perform at the top level as he has won 14 trophies with City, which includes five top-flight titles and one Champions League.

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.

Silva played 79 matches under Emery during their two seasons together at Paris Saint-Germain and was a colossal figure at the back for the Spanish head coach.

The Brazil international, like Laporte, is a proven winner who is also an outstanding defender. He won an eye-catching 25 trophies during his time in Paris and has gone on to win the Champions League with his current club Chelsea.

In the 2017/18 Ligue 1 campaign, Silva showcased his ability in possession for Emery's side with 4.77 progressive passes per 90, which placed him within the top 6% of his positional peers in the French top-flight – as per FBref.

This shows that the Brazilian titan was exceptional on the ball for the now-Villa tactician as he was able to consistently progress the team up the pitch with his incisive passing.

Laporte is a defender with similar qualities as the Spanish ace has ranked within the top 2% of centre-backs in the Premier League in each of the last six seasons with City for progressive passes per 90, which is an extraordinary achievement given the length of time he has been able to remain among the best in his position when it comes to passing out from the back.

The Etihad outcast has also averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.94 or higher in all six of those top-flight campaigns, which is a greater score than any Villa defender managed for the club last term.

Therefore, Laporte, who was once described as a “beast” by writer Muhammad Butt, could be a fantastic signing for the Villans as he is a proven winner who is also a solid defender and has sensational ability in possession.

This is why he could be Emery's next version of Silva, who offered those qualities to the manager in Paris, if the club can strike an agreement for the treble-winner.

TalkSport Drop Worrying Update On Crystal Palace Star

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze is "not particularly keen on signing" the new contract he has been offered at the club as he considers his future with other potential "suitors", claims journalist Alex Crook.

Is Eberechi Eze leaving Crystal Palace?

It has been a bit of a mixed transfer window for Palace so far this summer.

While they have signed the capable Jefferson Lerma from Premier League rivals Bournemouth on a free and look set to secure the signature of the highly-rated and highly sought-after Brazilian youngster Matheus Franca for around £26m, they have also lost their most important player – Wilfried Zaha.

Their talismanic winger and club legend left this summer after his contract expired, and with his goal to play Champions League football before he retires, he joined Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Crystal Palace'sWilfriedZaha

Things could also get worse for the Eagles, with The Guardian reporting that both Manchester City and Chelsea are 'considering' whether or not to make a 'formal bid' for their dynamic French winger Michael Olise.

And to top it all off, and make life even harder for Roy Hodgson next season, the brilliant Eze could soon be set to leave Selhurst Park as he is reportedly not "keen" on signing a new deal that he has been offered, per Alex Crook.

He explained the situation live on TalkSport, which was later posted to their YouTube channel:

"Interesting though, it was suggested to me – I've not ran this story yet I was going to do it in my notebook later in the week – that there's a contract offer on the table for Eze, but he's not particularly keen on signing it at this moment in time so that could be another player that maybe really has suitors."

How good was Eberechi Eze last season?

In a year in which Palace struggled to find the back of the net for long stretches, Eze was absolutely fantastic and one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise dull campaign for the Eagles.

In his 30 Premier League starts, the 25-year-old scored ten goals, provided four assists, maintained a passing accuracy of 82.6%, and won four Man-of-the-Match awards, all while maintaining a seriously impressive match rating of 7.02, per WhoScored.

With the former Queens Park Rangers star producing a goal contribution every 188 minutes – almost one every other game – it's hardly surprising to see that his underlying numbers are also incredible, suggesting he could replicate his form at a bigger club.

Eberechi Eze

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the "magic" midfielder sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals and successful take-ons, the top 2% for total shots, the top 5% non-penalty expected goals, the top 6% for shot-creating actions, and the top 7% for touches in the oppositions penalty area, all per 90.

He clearly left an impression on former boss Patrick Viera, who described the youngster as "different class" following an outstanding performance against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool early last season.

With Zaha already gone and the situation around Olise still up in the air, Palace need to do all they can to keep Eze in south London, as should he leave as well, they could be in big trouble come next season.

Kapugedera ruled out of series; Malinga to lead

Stand-in captain Chamara Kapugedera’s has been ruled out of the remainder of ODI series after a medical examination. Kapugedera aggravated a back injury during the third ODI on Sunday. He had been nursing a stiff back before the third ODI, but had batted and fielded in that game. In his absence, Lasith Malinga will assume the captaincy, chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya has said. The stiffness in Kapugedera’s back had been mild in the approach to the third game, and had not prompted much concern. “He did have the issue in Kandy, but I think when he went into bat, it got worse,” manager Asanka Gurusinha said.Kapugedara becomes the fifth Sri Lanka batsman to become unavailable. Danushka Gunathilaka was ruled out with a shoulder strain (though there remains a small possibility he could recover in time for the next match), and Upul Tharanga had been suspended due to a slow over rate. Dinesh Chandimal, who was brought into the squad ahead of the third ODI, was ruled out with a fractured finger. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera, and batting allrounder Asela Gunaratne had earlier also been ruled out of the series with injuries.Malinga has previously captained Sri Lanka’s T20 side, including in the final stages of the World T20 triumph in 2014.

Rangers Still Pursuing Move For "Exciting" £2.5m Player

Rangers and Nottingham Forest are still working on a deal for Jonathan Panzo, but the proposed switch has not advanced much further in the past week, according to a recent report from Football Scotland.

What's the latest Rangers transfer news?

Transfer insider Dean Jones suspects that Rangers may still have some work to do in the transfer market, despite already bringing in a number of players, recently telling GiveMeSport:

"I think it's seven they've got through the door already, at least a couple more to follow. The Cifuentes one is being held up a bit, but even with that, I don't think Rangers are finished yet. I'm expecting another forward player and another defender as well to be signed."

One defender the Gers are still considering a move for is Auston Trusty, who could be leaving Arsenal this summer, however, they now face a transfer battle, with English Championship side Ipswich Town also joining the race for his signature.

Panzo has been a target for the Light Blues for quite some time, with talks being held over a deal for the Nottingham Forest defender well over a month ago, and there has now been an update on their pursuit.

According to a report from Football Scotland, the deal is still being worked on by both clubs, but there has been very little progress in the past week, with Rangers aware it is likely they will need to pay £2.5m to secure his signature. Michael Beale is keen to add the 22-year-old to his squad, despite the recent arrival of Leon Balogun on a free transfer.

The player's salary has been put to the Light Blues, but there has been no recent movement while they are out in Germany for their pre-season training camp, and the deal does not appear to be edging any closer to completion.

Who is Jonathan Panzo?

Hailed as an "exciting young player" by Forest boss Steve Cooper, the centre-back started his career at Chelsea, making a handful of appearances at youth level, before going on to test himself in Ligue 1 with AS Monaco and Dijon, and in the Jupiler Pro League with Cercle Brugge.

Despite his age, the Englishman already has a considerable amount of first-team experience, emerging as an important player for Coventry during their push for the Premier League last season, making a total of 32 appearances in all competitions.

Forest U21s coach Dave Rogers has also praised the 6 foot 1 defender, who is represented by the same agent as Ben Davies, saying:

"He is a great professional. He's enthusiastic and has got good experience and energy too. He brings a great vibe to the dressing room too."

Over the past year, the former Monaco man ranks highly across a number of key metrics for defenders, when compared to players at a similar level, ranking in the 95th percentile for interceptions per 90, and in the 85th percentile for tackles. Therefore, Panzo could be a fantastic addition for Rangers, and Beale may well be hoping that more progress can be made in the coming days and weeks.
