“I would expect Liverpool to get Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation sorted by the end of the year. He is into the final two years of his current deal, and there is absolutely no doubting his importance to Liverpool’s long-term plans.

“I don’t expect any hiccups in negotiations. Alexander-Arnold wants to stay and Liverpool want to keep him. There will be a lot of clubs hoping something goes wrong, but I don’t see it. Trent’s future lies at Anfield.”

Leeds United could now find a cost-effective solution to their left-back issue despite the transfer window being closed at Elland Road, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Journalist Jacobs has indicated that Farke could be willing to enter the market for a left-back after recent injury problems concerning Junior Firpo.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs stated: "I don't expect Leeds to panic sign and get cover for cover's sake. But it's obvious to anyone who looks at what Leeds have got on paper that they still need to strengthen in that left-back position. So, if a free agent becomes available, they'll move because it's relatively low-risk and cost-effective. But right now, I just don't think there are that many targets that are right for Leeds. There's no point in just adding an extra body for the sake of it if they're not going to benefit the football team. So, the left-back position is Firpo’s and Leeds will just be praying that he stays fit."

Firpo looks to be closing in on a return to first-team action in the near future; however, it is unclear if he will be available for selection against Millwall this weekend.

As per Leeds Live, Whites boss Farke has confirmed that both Firpo and Sam Byram, who has deputised at left-back this term, are on the verge of re-entering the first-team fold, stating earlier this month: "I also have to say we've got Junior Firpo, we've got Sam Byram who was outstanding there (at left-back). So I hope both will be back on the other end of the International break at least. "It looks good with the rehab of both of them."

Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, but they are now at risk of missing out on him, a report has revealed.

Spurs have looked solid at the back in the Premier League so far this season, keeping clean sheets in their last two games, but they are still scouring the market for reinforcements in defence, having recently opened talks over a move for Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo.

In a recent report, it has been revealed that Eric Dier could be used as a makeweight in negotiations for the 25-year-old, given that he has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, with Fulham keen on signing him.

Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba has also been targeted by the Lilywhites, but the Bundesliga club's asking price of £50m is proving to be prohibitive, and they have now cooled their interest, however, Postecoglou still has some other options in mind.

Lenglet has also been a target for Spurs for much of the summer, with it previously being reported the defender had agreed a move to north London, and there has now been an update on whether he could still join.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are at the front of the queue for the Frenchman, following his loan spell last season, although Daniel Levy and co may have to move quickly if they are to get a deal over the line.

Although he is "looking for a way out" of Barcelona, the 28-year-old is growing frustrated by the lack of movement from his potential suitors, and he is now considering Saudi Arabia as a destination.

Barca are desperate to get rid of the centre-back, but his high wage packet has proven to be prohibitive all summer, as he is currently tied down to a £197k-per-week contract at the Camp Nou.

At the moment, Spurs' interest is "pending", but with Saudi Arabia now becoming a serious option, they will have to make their move sooner rather than later.

Tottenham still appear to be unwilling to make a concrete move for the France international, perhaps in light of his huge wage demands, but if they are able to get a deal over the line, there is evidence that he could be a solid back-up option for Postecoglou.

During his time on loan in north London last season, the former Lyon man was lauded as "outstanding" by members of the media, and he has a wealth of experience at the highest level, making 160 appearances for Barca, and 50 in the Champions League.

That said, Lenglet was unable to reach the heights expected of him in the 2022-23 campaign, averaging a SofaScore match rating of just 6.65 in the Premier League, the 20th-highest figure in an underachieving squad.

As such, Spurs may be better off instead pursuing a move for Adarabioyo, given that the 25-year-old performed far better in the Premier League last season, and he could be available in a swap deal, which would allow Postecoglou to get Dier off the wage bill in the process.

It is stated that the Cityzens are willing to cash in on the former Athletic Bilbao star following the signing of Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig for £77m. The Croatia international's arrival has opened the door for the left-footed ace to depart and a fee of £30m is said to be enough to secure his services.

Despite having fallen down the pecking order under Guardiola of late, Laporte remains an outstanding central defender who would be a phenomenal addition to the Villa squad.

The 29-year-old Rolls-Royce has proven himself to be an excellent Premier League performer who could be Unai Emery's next Thiago Silva.

Laporte, who was once dubbed "incredible" by Guardiola, would arrive as a serial winner who knows exactly what it takes to perform at the top level as he has won 14 trophies with City, which includes five top-flight titles and one Champions League.

Silva played 79 matches under Emery during their two seasons together at Paris Saint-Germain and was a colossal figure at the back for the Spanish head coach.

The Brazil international, like Laporte, is a proven winner who is also an outstanding defender. He won an eye-catching 25 trophies during his time in Paris and has gone on to win the Champions League with his current club Chelsea.

In the 2017/18 Ligue 1 campaign, Silva showcased his ability in possession for Emery's side with 4.77 progressive passes per 90, which placed him within the top 6% of his positional peers in the French top-flight – as per FBref.

This shows that the Brazilian titan was exceptional on the ball for the now-Villa tactician as he was able to consistently progress the team up the pitch with his incisive passing.

Laporte is a defender with similar qualities as the Spanish ace has ranked within the top 2% of centre-backs in the Premier League in each of the last six seasons with City for progressive passes per 90, which is an extraordinary achievement given the length of time he has been able to remain among the best in his position when it comes to passing out from the back.

The Etihad outcast has also averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.94 or higher in all six of those top-flight campaigns, which is a greater score than any Villa defender managed for the club last term.

Therefore, Laporte, who was once described as a “beast” by writer Muhammad Butt, could be a fantastic signing for the Villans as he is a proven winner who is also a solid defender and has sensational ability in possession.

This is why he could be Emery's next version of Silva, who offered those qualities to the manager in Paris, if the club can strike an agreement for the treble-winner.

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze is "not particularly keen on signing" the new contract he has been offered at the club as he considers his future with other potential "suitors", claims journalist Alex Crook.

Is Eberechi Eze leaving Crystal Palace?

It has been a bit of a mixed transfer window for Palace so far this summer.

While they have signed the capable Jefferson Lerma from Premier League rivals Bournemouth on a free and look set to secure the signature of the highly-rated and highly sought-after Brazilian youngster Matheus Franca for around £26m, they have also lost their most important player – Wilfried Zaha.

Their talismanic winger and club legend left this summer after his contract expired, and with his goal to play Champions League football before he retires, he joined Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Things could also get worse for the Eagles, with The Guardian reporting that both Manchester City and Chelsea are 'considering' whether or not to make a 'formal bid' for their dynamic French winger Michael Olise.

And to top it all off, and make life even harder for Roy Hodgson next season, the brilliant Eze could soon be set to leave Selhurst Park as he is reportedly not "keen" on signing a new deal that he has been offered, per Alex Crook.

He explained the situation live on TalkSport, which was later posted to their YouTube channel:

"Interesting though, it was suggested to me – I've not ran this story yet I was going to do it in my notebook later in the week – that there's a contract offer on the table for Eze, but he's not particularly keen on signing it at this moment in time so that could be another player that maybe really has suitors."

With the former Queens Park Rangers star producing a goal contribution every 188 minutes – almost one every other game – it's hardly surprising to see that his underlying numbers are also incredible, suggesting he could replicate his form at a bigger club.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the "magic" midfielder sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals and successful take-ons, the top 2% for total shots, the top 5% non-penalty expected goals, the top 6% for shot-creating actions, and the top 7% for touches in the oppositions penalty area, all per 90.

He clearly left an impression on former boss Patrick Viera, who described the youngster as "different class" following an outstanding performance against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool early last season.

With Zaha already gone and the situation around Olise still up in the air, Palace need to do all they can to keep Eze in south London, as should he leave as well, they could be in big trouble come next season.

Stand-in captain Chamara Kapugedera’s has been ruled out of the remainder of ODI series after a medical examination. Kapugedera aggravated a back injury during the third ODI on Sunday. He had been nursing a stiff back before the third ODI, but had batted and fielded in that game. In his absence, Lasith Malinga will assume the captaincy, chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya has said.The stiffness in Kapugedera’s back had been mild in the approach to the third game, and had not prompted much concern. “He did have the issue in Kandy, but I think when he went into bat, it got worse,” manager Asanka Gurusinha said.Kapugedara becomes the fifth Sri Lanka batsman to become unavailable. Danushka Gunathilaka was ruled out with a shoulder strain (though there remains a small possibility he could recover in time for the next match), and Upul Tharanga had been suspended due to a slow over rate. Dinesh Chandimal, who was brought into the squad ahead of the third ODI, was ruled out with a fractured finger. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera, and batting allrounder Asela Gunaratne had earlier also been ruled out of the series with injuries.Malinga has previously captained Sri Lanka’s T20 side, including in the final stages of the World T20 triumph in 2014.

Rangers and Nottingham Forest are still working on a deal for Jonathan Panzo, but the proposed switch has not advanced much further in the past week, according to a recent report from Football Scotland.

Panzo has been a target for the Light Blues for quite some time, with talks being held over a deal for the Nottingham Forest defender well over a month ago, and there has now been an update on their pursuit.

According to a report from Football Scotland, the deal is still being worked on by both clubs, but there has been very little progress in the past week, with Rangers aware it is likely they will need to pay £2.5m to secure his signature. Michael Beale is keen to add the 22-year-old to his squad, despite the recent arrival of Leon Balogun on a free transfer.

The player's salary has been put to the Light Blues, but there has been no recent movement while they are out in Germany for their pre-season training camp, and the deal does not appear to be edging any closer to completion.

Despite his age, the Englishman already has a considerable amount of first-team experience, emerging as an important player for Coventry during their push for the Premier League last season, making a total of 32 appearances in all competitions.

Forest U21s coach Dave Rogers has also praised the 6 foot 1 defender, who is represented by the same agent as Ben Davies, saying:

"He is a great professional. He's enthusiastic and has got good experience and energy too. He brings a great vibe to the dressing room too."

Over the past year, the former Monaco man ranks highly across a number of key metrics for defenders, when compared to players at a similar level, ranking in the 95th percentile for interceptions per 90, and in the 85th percentile for tackles. Therefore, Panzo could be a fantastic addition for Rangers, and Beale may well be hoping that more progress can be made in the coming days and weeks.
