"Important" Offer Could Land £70m Man for Chelsea

Chelsea's hopes of signing Dusan Vlahovic have been handed a boost as the player is no longer considered "untouchable" by Juventus, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Will Chelsea sign Vlahovic?

Despite being just 23-years-old, Vlahovic has been around for some time.

After becoming Partizan Belgrade's youngest ever player and goalscorer at just 16, Fiorentina were the ones who managed to snap up his signature for a now miniscule fee of £2.7m in 2018.

Following an impressive period with the Violets, scoring 49 goals in 108 games, Juventus were first on the scene to snatch him from Florence, parting ways with £66.6m in the process.

His time in Turin has been less fruitful, however, with just 23 goals in a year-and-a-half and he has been subject to significant criticism from some in Italy, albeit his arrival at Juventus has naturally coincided with one of the clubs more difficult spells on and off the pitch.

Vlahovic is still a brilliant number nine, something he has exhibited in patches at Juventus and in full with Serbia on international duty. There is still the feeling that the 6ft 2 striker of a forward will come good sooner rather than later.

That renaissance could be in the Premier League though, with Juventus softening their stance on the forward's availability amid interest from Chelsea, according to Romano.

The Blues are lacking a clinical number nine and despite having brought in Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, there is a sense that Mauricio Pochettino would still like a more complete centre-forward to go alongside them.

There have been suggestions that £70m may be enough to land Vlahovic, with Chelsea not against spending large sums on players with huge potential.

Is Vlahovic up for sale?

According to Romano, an "important bid" could be enough to lure Vlahovic from the Allianz with Chelsea sniffing around the Serbian international.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed: "He is an important player for Juventus and he remains an important player for Juventus, but from what I'm told also because of an internal decision of Juve, at the moment Vlahovic is not untouchable.

"He is not considered a player on the market, so Juventus are not desperate to sell Dusan Vlahovic, but if they receive an important, and I want to say again, really important bid for Dusan Vlahovic they are prepared to open negotiations."

He continued: "We had rumours about Chelsea in the recent hours. He's always been appreciated by people in the board at Chelsea but at the moment from what I'm hearing there is no bid from Chelsea, no negotiation with Juventus.

"So, at the moment nothing concrete to say about Chelsea and Dusan Vlahovic. Let's see what happens in the next weeks and months but Chelsea, I repeat, appreciated the player since long time, but not actively working on the deal as of now."

Romano adds that Paris Saint-Germain also hold an interest in the player as they look for a central striker in the window. Just like they did with Manuel Ugarte, the French champions could jump ahead of Chelsea if they act quickly.

Chelsea's main issue was scoring goals last season, only managing 38 in the 38 in the Premier League – significantly lower than relegated Leeds United and Leicester City.

Pochettino, especially given his preference for attacking football, will be desperate to fix the problem in the transfer market and Vlahovic could be a prime target to end Chelsea's goalscoring woes.

Nash leads way as Sussex see off Surrey

Chris Nash’s 82 from 87 balls, with three sixes and eight fours, spearheaded a fine all-round effort by Sussex at Hove

ScorecardChris Nash pulls on his way to 82•Getty ImagesChris Nash’s 82 from 87 balls, with three sixes and eight fours, spearheaded a fine all-round effort by Sussex at Hove as they first reached 300 for 8 and then bowled out Surrey for 205 to win what was an important Royal London Cup South Group match for both sides by 95 runs.Mark Stoneman batted well for 60 in Surrey’s reply, and Ollie Pope offered late defiance with 55 off 63 balls but their challenge quickly faded after Stoneman pulled David Wiese straight to deep square leg.Stoneman had already seen Scott Borthwick and Dom Sibley depart cheaply to edges behind, and soon Surrey had lost their top five with Ben Foakes brilliantly held for 3 by keeper Michael Burgess off an inside edge – Wiese again the successful bowler – and Rory Burns falling for 31 when Danny Briggs dived to his left to hold a low one-handed catch off his own bowling. The slump then continued to 146 for 7 with Sam Curran bowled by a George Garton near-yorker and Tom Curran skying Briggs to mid-off. Gareth Batty, on 14, was held on the deep midwicket ropes but the19-year-old Pope reached a creditable 55-ball fifty, swinging Briggs for six and then late-cutting him delightfully for four.Garton finally got Pope, well held by Jofra Archer at long-on, and Wiese wrapped up Sussex’s third victory from five group matches by castling last man Ravi Rampaul to finish with 4 for 29. Sussex, who also have a No Result point in the locker, now have seven points in a group led by Somerset and Essex.Put in on a good pitch, Sussex were also indebted to Harry Finch for a 78-ball 61 – he and Nash put on 85 for the second wicket – and Laurie Evans for a violent 37 from 23 balls with three leg-side sixes off Tom Curran, two in a 45th over which cost the Surrey seamer 24 runs. That assault by Evans, plus useful late hitting from Burgess and Wiese, propelled Sussex to the 300 mark after their momentum had been temporarily stalled by Nash’s departure at 149 and the dismissals of both Finch and Stiaan Van Zyl in the 39th over.Sussex’s innings was given a fine start by Nash and Luke Wright, who tucked into the Curran brothers in the initial Powerplay overs – Nash taking three successive fours off Sam Curran in the fourth over and Wright then hitting Tom Curran for two boundaries in the next over. Wright departed for 34 in the 12th over, inside-edging a drive at Rampaul, but Nash reached his fifty by lofting Batty’s offspin effortlessly over long-off for six, and repeating the stroke in the Surrey captain’s next over.Nash had also pulled Tom Curran for six but, after another powerful pull for four off the younger Curran, he top-edged a hook in the same over high towards long leg and saw Tom Curran run in to pull off a brilliant, athletic sprawling catch as he dived forward across the turf. Van Zyl was another to fall to the short ball, top-edging to fine leg, while Finch nicked an excellent ball from Tom Curran to the keeper.Evans, fresh from a spectacular match-winning hundred against Kent two days before, which had included eight sixes, showed he was a man in form by beautifully extra-cover driving Stuart Meaker for an early four, before picking up a length ball from Tom Curran for his first six.Umpire Nigel Llong did well to avoid a crashing straight four from the next ball, and the over ended with Evans flicking a full toss from Curran high over fine leg.Burgess, after a straight six off Rampaul, skied to deep midwicket on 23 and Evans was leg-before to Sam Curran in the same over that Archer was run out for 1. There was just time for Wiese to club a huge six over long-on off Rampaul before he was caught on the straight boundary for 23 from the last ball of the innings.

Tottenham Could Land Their Next Son In £17k-p/w "Revelation"

With Ange Postecoglou now at the helm, Tottenham Hotspur are seemingly set to step up their summer transfer dealings, with the Lilywhites seeking to improve upon a rather turbulent and underwhelming 2022/23 campaign.

As per 90min, the 57-year-old has already given his approval with regard to certain transfer pursuits – including the club's interest in James Maddison – while there are also said to be fears among those at his former club, Celtic, that the Greek-Aussie may return to raid the Old Firm outfit.

The piece notes that among those who the one-time Australia head coach may be keen to reunite with is wing wizard, Jota, with the Portuguese sensation having dazzled under Postecoglou's watch over the last two seasons.

The 24-year-old was originally snapped up by the experienced coach on a season-long loan deal from Benfica back in the summer of 2021, before signing permanently with the Parkhead giants on a £6.4m deal a year ago.

That bargain capture already appears rather astute as the wide man is now said to be valued at around £12m, according to Football Transfers, with that a marker of the meteoric rise he has made of late.

Who is Celtic's Jota?

The £17k-per-week trickster could well prove to be the heir apparent to Heung-min Son on the left flank, with the Celtic star mirroring the South Korean international with his ability to offer quality service and a clinical presence in front of goal.

While Son endured a poor season by his own lofty standards – after scoring 'just' ten Premier League goals – the 30-year-old has typically been a consistent force for the Lilywhites over the years, bagging 145 goals and providing 80 assists in 372 games across all fronts.

Much like Jota would be to most Spurs supporters, the former Bayer Leverkusen ace was something of an unknown quantity after initially making the move to north London in 2015, although has gone on to establish himself as a "world class" talent, according to former boss, Antonio Conte.

Spurs' Heung-min Son

While the Bhoys ace may not be quite at that level just yet, the Lisbon native has been something of a "revelation" in Scottish football to date, according to pundit Alex McLeish, having contributed 54 goals and assists in just 83 games in all competitions for his current side.

The 5 foot 9 ace notably showed flashes of his quality during the club's Champions League run having whipped in a delightful free-kick in the defeat to Real Madrid back in November, with pundit Frank McAvennie subsequently stating that it was "scary" that the playmaker could get even better, having not been fully fit at the time.

Evidently a man for the big occasion – having registered five goals and assists in just ten meetings with rivals Rangers – Jota also mirrors Son due to his creative quality having created 13 big chances and averaged 1.9 key passes per game in 33 Scottish Premiership games this season, while the current Spurs ace has created nine big chances and averaged 1.8 key passes per game from his 36 league outings.

Although Postecoglou is unlikely to upset the apple cart by replacing Son in the short term, the incoming boss could well find a suitable, long-term replacement for the long-serving speedster with the signing of his former asset.

Liverpool Could Repeat Matip Masterclass With £34k-p/w "Hero"

When Jurgen Klopp decided to take a punt on Liverpool in 2015, Anfield had gone to seed.

Not literally – the chalky-topped stadium was very much in fine condition, though its inhabitants had fallen foul of a loss of identity and deterioration from prominence in the Premier League and Champions League.

The German manager, who had previously enjoyed illustrious success with Borussia Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles in succession and the DFB Pokal, took the reins and crafted a dynasty on Merseyside, with Liverpool having now won a Premier League trophy and their sixth Champions League.

While standout stars such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson are the salient acquisitions, the likes of James Milner and Joel Matip, both secured on free transfers, illustrate the shrewd moves that rooted the success.

The latter, Cameroonian Matip, was acquired from Bundesliga outfit Schalke on a free transfer in 2016 and has been integral in securing silverware under Klopp's tutelage, having forged 186 appearances.

Klopp could now replicate his success in delving into his homeland's league by signing Eintracht Frankfurt's Daichi Kamada, with the Japanese midfielder set for departure at the end of his contract in a matter of weeks.

According to the Express, the 26-year-old is on the shortlist of the Reds' imminent new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, and could be a wise addition for a team looking to return to the fore after a wayward year.

Why should Liverpool sign Daichi Kamada?

Granted, Matip and Kamada don't bear many similarities in their respective skill sets on the pitch, but attempting to complete an astute deal for a player available on a free transfer from Germany could prove a fruitful avenue for Liverpool to delve down.

While embroiled in his outfit's issues this season, the 31-year-old has previously been lauded as "dominant" and "confident' by former Reds defender Sami Hyypia.

Notably, Matip provided the assist for Divock Origi's match-clinching strike in the Champions League final, and ranks among the top 3% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 9% for progressive passes, top 1% for progressive carries per 90 and the top 6% for touches in the attacking box, as per FBref.

The £34k-per-week Kamada, a two-footed and dynamic attacking midfielder capable of thriving across a multitude of central and wide positions, could be the perfect answer to Liverpool's woes, with the Merseyside outfit failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in seven seasons and in dire need of midfield reinforcements with a mass exodus forthcoming.

Liverpool need a new dimension, and with Kamada, lauded as a "hero" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, reaping 16 goals and seven assists from 46 appearances this year – including three goals in the Champions League – the Anfield centre could be rejuvenated with his arrival.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 5% of midfielders for non-penalty goals and the top 20% for assists per 90, mirroring Matip's natural instinct to surge forwards by ranking among the top 10% for touches in the attacking box per 90.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola heralded the "exceptional team" that Klopp has created, and Matip has indeed been a centrepiece to this, with his arrival helping to patch the side up when they needed defensive replenishment.

Now, the midfield needs the attention, and Klopp must mirror his past success in astutely targeting Germany to sign Kamada for free.

Newcastle Could Sign Fernandes 2.0 In £40m Monster

Newcastle United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Leicester City playmaker James Maddison following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

What's the latest on James Maddison to Newcastle?

According to the Mirror, the 26-year-old England international will lead the mass exodus at the King Power Stadium after City's miserable campaign ended with a slump into the second tier, with a fee of £40m touted.

The Magpies actually failed with a £50m bid for Maddison one year ago, with Leicester holding out for £60m, but it is Newcastle technical director Dan Ashworth who will be able to exert his authority in pursuing a deal, with the Foxes already revealing record £92.5m losses this year.

With London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also vying for a deal, Newcastle must seal the deal swiftly; Maddison will be highly coveted now his club have plummeted from the top flight.

How would James Maddison perform at Newcastle?

The two-cap England international has been a prolific midfield force since signing from Norwich City for £24m in 2018, having chalked up 203 appearances for Leicester, plundering 55 goals and 41 assists – notably winning the FA Cup and Community Shield.

His boss Dean Smith described him as a "football nut" and he is an astute and intelligent playmaker, and his passion for his play is evidenced by his prolific return this season, flourishing despite his club's woes and scoring ten goals and serving nine assists from 30 matches.

He would arrive on Tyneside at a time when his addition could transform the club's offensive impetus from the centre.

Indeed, Newcastle have been sensational under Eddie Howe's stewardship this season and have qualified for the top four with the conviction of a tried and tested squad of winners, and the feeling is that a first-rate addition or two could transcend fortunes to something greater, potentially taking a place alongside the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid at the forefront of Europe.

Leicester City'sJamesMaddisonreacts

He could well emulate the success of Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United, who has been the creative catalyst for the Red Devils since his initial £47m signing from Sporting Lison, making 184 appearances, scoring 63 goals, assisting 54 more and winning the Carabao Cup – against Newcastle – this season.

The "monster" – as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting – that is Maddison certainly bears a semblance to his Portuguese counterpart, with FBref, ranking the aces as similar players.

Fernandes ranks among the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for rate of progressive passes per 90.

The £110k-per-week Maddison, comparatively, ranks among the top 20% of positional peers for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 13% for rate of assists, the top 12% for shot-creating actions and the top 14% for progressive passes per 90, which is not too shabby for a star embroiled in a relegation battle all term.

Hailed as "world-class" by his England manager Gareth Southgate, Maddison would provide the spark and ingenuity to lift Newcastle to new heights, which is an ominous thought for the rest of the Premier League after such an exemplary 22/23 campaign.

Somerset gamble on late pitch change

Harry Podmore claimed four wickets on his first County Championship appearance for Middlesex as Somerset were bowled out for 236 on the opening day of the match at Taunton.Having made a late decision to switch from a dry looking strip to a very green one, the hosts were indebted to Chris Rogers, Jim Allenby and Marcus Trescothick for securing a bonus point in testing conditions.Podmore, James Harris and James Fuller profited from excellent seam bowling conditions after the visitors had not surprisingly elected to field.By the close of a rain-affected day, Middlesex had replied with 51 for 1 from 16 overs, losing Sam Robson lbw to the second ball of the innings from Craig Overton. Nick Gubbins was unbeaten on 31.Explaining the late change of pitch, Rogers said: “We were caught off guard because we didn’t know Tim Murtagh was unavailable for Middlesex. That being the case we felt our best chance of winning was to back our seam attack against their inexperienced one.”Middlesex bowled not so well in the morning session, but very well after lunch. We were poor when we bowled at them and I expect us to be a lot better and more patient in the morning. We have played on so many flat pitches that our bowlers probably got excited. But I still feel the change of pitch was a gamble worth taking and that we are in a decent position.”Graham Cowdrey, the Cricket Liaison Officer at the game, said: “At this stage the umpires have found no problem with the pitch and it is Somerset’s call which pitch they play on.”Somerset had put only six runs on the board when Johann Myburgh edged Fuller through to wicketkeeper John Simpson and departed for a duck. But Rogers and Trescothick then produced the most positive strokeplay of the day, punishing anything loose in their second-wicket stand of 71.Trescothick looked at his imperious best as his first eight scoring strokes brought boundaries before he got an inside edge onto his stumps to give Harris his first wicket. The Middlesex bowlers failed to make the most of the conditions in the morning session. James Hildreth hit a six over backward point off Fuller before being adjudged lbw for 19 to a delivery from the same bowler.Rogers moved to an attractive half-century off 68 balls, with ten fours, and was still there at lunch, with his side 125 for 3 off 27 overs.Soon after the interval came the first rain break, with 30 minutes lost. When play resumed Middlesex bowled a better line and length, reaping reward with four wickets.Rogers was caught by the diving Simpson leg-glancing a ball from Podmore, who had played in the competition only while on loan to Glamorgan earlier in the season. He followed up by having Peter Trego caught behind for 4 off a full, swinging delivery. And it was 154 for 6 when Craig Overton fell for a duck, chasing a wide one from Harris and offering Simpson his fourth catch.Alex Barrow contributed 10 before being caught at second slip by Ollie Rayner off Harris and when rain forced an early tea Somerset were 184 for 7.The final session saw 27 runs added before Jamie Overton was caught at first slip aiming a full-blooded drive at Podmore. The players followed him off as rain brought a third interruption. All the time Allenby had been compiling a valuable knock, riding his luck at times and surviving a tough one-handed chance to Rayner at slip off Podmore when on 35.He had battled away for 115 balls when finally getting one with his name on it, edging Podmore behind to give Simpson a fifth victim. Rayner then took a fine diving slip catch to dismiss Jack Leach for 12 as Fuller took a deserved third wicket.

Newcastle Plotting Move To Sign £26m "Monster" Fullback

Newcastle United have enquired about signing Denzel Dumfries to provide competition for Kieran Trippier with a spot in next season's Champions League now almost certain.

While the Tyneside outfit has been an example to follow for other Champions League hopefuls, careful recruitment is required to ensure they can maintain their upward trajectory. For this, Eddie Howe needs to emulate the smart recruitment that has allowed the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City to compete consistently in multiple competitions in recent years.

It's no secret that Newcastle's owners have the money to spend big but identifying bargain buys will allow them to be far more sustainable in the long term. This is especially important when recruiting players for squad roles.

Newcastle make "enquiry" over Denzel Dumfries

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching fullbacks outside the Premier League is Inter Milan's Dumfries. On Wednesday, Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, claimed that Newcastle have enquired over his availability this summer.

While Dumfries is no doubt an exciting prospect, he hasn't always been the consistent performer Inter were hoping for when they signed him. That said, his talent is not in doubt.

Inter however face severe financial constraints and reportedly need to balance their books with €100m (£87m) worth of player sales this summer – Dumfries will reportedly be allowed to leave for a fee in the region of €30m (£26m).

Dumfries, Andre Onana and Marcelo Brozovic are three players the Serie A outfit could shift to bring in the revenue required, and selling the Dutch fullback to a Premier League club where they could maximise their income would be a smart move.

What would Dumfries' role be for Eddie Howe?

With members of the media referring to Dumfries as a "monster" in defence, he certainly sounds like the ideal player to come in and compete with Trippier.

This season, Trippier has been hailed from all over England with his maturity and consistent quality providing a platform upon which Newcastle's attackers have thrived.

Despite playing in the more competitive league, Trippier has assisted more goals (9) than Dumfries (6), although that will not likely be a major consideration for Newcastle's recruitment team.

Given that Dumfries would reportedly only cost £26m, he'd make an excellent squad option especially given Howe's tendency to play with wing backs against certain opponents. In a traditional setup, Dumfries could be exposed, but in a system featuring three centre backs and two wing backs, he excels. This has been showcased both at international level with Holland but also at PSV and Inter.
