Bopara: 'When I feel a bit dead, that's when I'm at my best'

Ravi Bopara rolled back the years with a sensational century – his third in a T20 career that has now spanned 22 years and almost 500 individual contests – to power Northamptonshire into Vitality Blast Finals Day at the expense of the tournament favourites, Surrey, on a thrilling night at the Kia Oval.Bopara has been on the scene so long that he is old enough to have featured in the second-ever day of T20 fixtures – for Essex, also against Surrey, in the original Twenty20 Cup in June 2003. But now, at the age of 40, he produced arguably his greatest knock in the format, to give Northants a shot at their third Blast title, and first since 2016.The contest had already been reduced to 14 overs a side due to heavy evening rain when Northants – asked to bat first – slumped to 1 for 2 in the first over. Jordan Clark removed Ricardo Vasconcelos with his first ball and David Willey with his sixth, also for a duck.Bopara, however, remained unfazed by the tough conditions, insisting that Northamptonshire’s gameplan was to “just keep going”, irrespective of the threat posed by a Surrey team that had topped the South Group with eight wins out of 11 in the competition’s group stages.”It was an amazing win,” Bopara told Sky Sports as he accepted his player-of-the-match award. “We knew there was going to be a bit of rain about, and we knew that this pitch might nibble at the start, but our philosophy was ‘just keep going’ and it will come off. And today it did.”We’re always going to stick with it. Because if someone has a day out, you end up posting a score like that. If someone gets a quick 80 or 100, you’re away.”That someone turned out to be Bopara himself, with 12 fours and five sixes in a magnificent unbeaten 105 from 46 balls. Afterwards he said that an inner calmness had been the key to his composure.”I don’t know if I’m getting better, but I was thinking about it all night,” he said. “I didn’t have that fire in my belly today, and that’s when I prefer it, when I feel a bit dead. That’s when I feel like I’m going to perform my best. It doesn’t always work, but [when it does] it’s good.”He also praised his team’s bowling effort for closing out the contest, despite a battling 69 not out from 38 balls from Surrey’s captain, Sam Curran.”It was very slippery out there,” Bopara said. “The chat was just to hold length. Length was the hardest ball to hit because it just nipped a little bit, and didn’t come off the surface at the same pace. We faltered from our plan a little bit in the middle, which brought them back into the game, but then went back to it towards the death. So that was good stuff.”Willey, whose composure with the ball was key to Northants’ successful defence, heaped praise on his team-mate, who will head to Edgbaston next week hoping to land his second Blast title, after a match-sealing knock of 36 not out from 22 balls in Essex’s victory over Worcestershire in 2019.”We got him for his experience, and that’s exactly what we got … big game, and he stood up,” Willey said. “He’s had a few murmurs of hanging the boots up, but hopefully we can prise him out for one more year, when he can play like that. It was just exceptional power, and also the skill that he showed there in that innings, from two-down for next to nothing, was fantastic.”Northants are now two games away from joining Leicestershire and Hampshire as the most successful team in T20 Blast history, with three titles each.”For a small club like us to get to Finals Day [is huge],” Willey said. “We’re obviously delighted to be there. It was a fantastic game of cricket here tonight. Hopefully we can build on that going into next weekend.”For Curran, the loss came just days after his pivotal role in Oval Invincibles’ third consecutive Men’s Hundred title. He is on course to land a second trophy this season, with Surrey favourites to claim the County Championship for the fourth season in a row. But he admitted he was ‘gutted’ at letting this contest slip.”It was a great game of cricket, credit to everyone for getting it on,” he said. “We’re gutted, it hurts very much when you get so close but credit to Northants – they held their nerve and nailed their skills in tough conditions. Good luck to them on Finals Day.”I thought anything around 140 would be a decent score and obviously with a wet outfield and wet ball it was tough. When I was batting and we kept it at two a ball, I felt like we were in the game, with the batting we had to come.”Ravi played an incredible knock and showed that world-class experience – in these kind of games, it just takes that one innings. Sometimes you just have to say ‘well played’ and learn from it.”It hurts now and it should – this is a tournament we’ve struggled to win over the years. The boys are in a good place with the four-day stuff and we’ll dust ourselves down, keep our heads up and hope to come running in hard on Monday (in the County Championship).”

ExWHUemployee says Nuno really isn't fond of another West Ham player after Ward-Prowse

New West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo is continuing to assess his best squad as the Hammers look to swerve a relegation dogfight.

Nuno raises eyebrows with West Ham team to play Brentford

Nuno attracted plenty of criticism after fielding what was a bizarre starting line-up last time out against Brentford.

The Portuguese seriously tinkered with his side, playing Olly Scarles and Kyle Walker-Peters on their opposite full-back sides and going with the largely static midfield duo of Tomas Soucek and Andy Irving.

Despite speculation that highly-rated young striker Callum Marshall – who scored for fun in West Ham’s youth setup and got into double figures on loan at Huddersfield last season – was due to start, Nuno instead went with Lucas Paqueta as a false nine.

By all accounts, his experiment was a disaster.

West Ham failed to lay a glove on Brentford throughout a dire 90 minutes where Keith Andrews’s side strolled to a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium, and the home side were lucky the scoreline wasn’t more embarrassing.

Tony Cottee slammed Nuno’s “awful” West Ham team selection to play Brentford, and he wasn’t the only one.

It will be interesting to see how the former Nottingham Forest boss sets his team up to play Leeds at Elland Road tonight, but there are a couple of players who definitely won’t be taking part.

Almost immediately after replacing Graham Potter, Nuno axed vice-captain James Ward-Prowse from the matchday squad, and the Englishman hasn’t featured since.

The 30-year-old, who is believed to be one free-kick goal away from matching David Beckham’s all-time Premier League record of 18, isn’t fancied at all by Nuno and reports suggest that Ward-Prowse is likely to leave West Ham in January.

Niclas Füllkrug, George Earthy and Konstantinos Mavropanos will also miss West Ham’s trip to Leeds through injury.

Meanwhile, as per insider ExWHUemployee, Nuno is unlikely to start summer signing Callum Wilson.

ExWHUemployee shares real reason why Nuno is snubbing Callum Wilson

Writing via his Patreon, Ex has responded to claims that West Ham are hesitant to play the Englishman due to a high appearance fee.

WestHamUnited manager GrahamPotter and Callum Wilson celebrate after the match

The club signed Wilson on a free transfer from Newcastle, and reports at the time stated that the majority of his West Ham earnings would come through a ‘pay as you play’ agreement, where as much as 90 per cent of his salary could depend on appearances made.

This has led to murmurs that West Ham aren’t playing Wilson to save cash, but Ex has refuted this.

It is actually believed that Nuno simply doesn’t fancy Wilson at West Ham, making the need for a new centre-forward in January all the more pressing.

Nuno definitely cannot play Paqueta up top again following a pretty lacklustre display against Brentford, where he lost possession a seismic 23 times.

The Brazilian is far better utilised playing in midfield where he can influence the game with his creativity, so Nuno will likely go with either Marshall or Jarrod Bowen as a makeshift striker.

This being said, West Ham legend Tony Gale is convinced that Nuno needs to play Wilson as the number nine.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta learns FA punishment following 'two proven breaches' during betting investigation

Lucas Paqueta has been sanctioned by the Football Association (FA) for "two proven breaches" following their investigation into alleged spot-fixing. The West Ham United and Brazil midfielder was cleared of four spot-fixing charges by an independent commission in July – almost two years after English football's governing body launched their investigation.

Paqueta was cleared of four spot-fixing charges in July

The FA began their investigation in August 2023 and Paqueta was charged in May 2024 for allegedly getting booked deliberately "for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market".

The four charges against the 28-year-old related to a Premier League game against Leicester City on 12 November 2022, alongside 2023 fixtures against Aston Villa on 12 March, Leeds United on 21 May and Bournemouth on 12 August.

Former Lyon midfielder Paqueta was faced with the prospect of a lifetime ban if found guilty. However, the regulatory commission found the four charges to be "not proven" following the hearing.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportBrazil midfielder thanked West Ham after he was cleared

After the verdict in July, Paqueta said: ”Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations.

"I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face.

"To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.”

Paqueta has now been sanctioned by FA for 'two breaches'

But Paqueta has now been sanctioned for "failing to comply with a requirement to answer questions and provide information to The FA’s investigation into breaches of the Rules".

Paqueta had denied the two charges, however both breaches of FA Rule F3 were found proven following a hearing. The regulatory commission has imposed a reprimand and a warning over Paqueta’s future conduct.

West Ham say they are pleased the case 'is finally closed'

Following the news, West Ham said they were pleased the investigation "is now finally closed".

A statement on the club's official website reads: "West Ham United acknowledges the statement published by the Football Association today, confirming that Lucas Paqueta has received a warning as to his future conduct, following two proven breaches of FA rule F3, after he was cleared of misconduct charges made against him for alleged breaches of FA rule E5.

"West Ham United and Lucas Paqueta are pleased that this matter is now finally closed. The Club will be making no further comment."

Leeds have secured "one of the best signings in the PL" & it's not Stach

The last time Leeds United sealed promotion to the Premier League courtesy of former Elland Road icon Marcelo Bielsa, there was a lot of promise in the air that the Uruguayan would be the transformative figure to make the West Yorkshire side a top-flight staple once more.

In all fairness, for a brief moment in time, he looked to be just the radical figure they needed, with a ninth-place finish in the Premier League coming right after the Championship title had been triumphantly lifted.

Unfortunately, it all unravelled from this point onwards, with relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season coming about with Sam Allardyce at the helm, long after the South American’s sad exit.

Can Daniel Farke be the manager to finally establish Leeds as a superpower in the top league? The German has already collected two early wins to guide the Whites to a promising 11th spot, after all.

It appears as if Leeds have really strengthened their options after lifting the second-tier title on a mammoth 100 points, with Farke already in love with a vast portion of his new personnel.

Ranking Leeds' best summer signings

Farke will be desperate to steer Leeds to safety having already tasted the bitterness of relegation from the top-flight when managing Norwich City.

The early signs show that the Whites won’t be basement dwellers, with new signings such as Gabriel Gudmundsson, surely too good to be sucked into a relegation battle.

Minus scoring an own-goal away at Fulham, the energetic Swede has stood out as a very competent replacement for Junior Firpo in the infancy of this season so far, with his determination to keep the ball in play last time out against AFC Bournemouth culminating in Leeds taking the lead.

While he couldn’t follow up on his goal away at Wolverhampton Wanderers versus the Cherries, Noah Okafor also shone as a bright attacking spark against Andoni Iraola’s men.

He will likely be viewed as another sterling summer pick-up, with a tricky three successful dribbles being registered, keeping the South Coast visitors on their toes.

There is also Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He won’t be the best signing Leeds ever make but Premier League-proven, he has shown flashes of his quality at this level already when expertly heading an effort home at Molineux.

But, Anton Stach has a convincing case to be viewed as Leeds’ top bit of business overall, with the £17m forked out to land the German already looking like money well spent.

Why Stach has become so important for Leeds

Stach had impressed early on at Elland Road, but he truly arrived on the scene in some style when hammering home a stunning free kick away at Vitor Pereira’s Old Gold.

Away from just this audacious effort – which was heralded as a “beauty” by Gary Lineker – Stach has also stood out as a well-rounded, aggressive presence in the middle of the park for Leeds in a similar build to fan favourite, Yorkshire Pirlo, Kalvin Phillips.

Of course, when Phillips was at the heart of the Bielsa operation, Leeds managed to finish in that aforementioned ninth spot in the challenging division.

History could well repeat itself with a similarly robust, yet skilful figure now in Farke’s XI, with 3.7 ball recoveries averaged per game this season in Premier League action, followed up by the former Hoffenheim ace also winning a high 5.3 duels per clash.

Former Watford striker turned pundit Troy Deeney has also waxed lyrical about Stach since his arrival, labelling the number 18 as “very impressive”.

But, he isn’t the only midfielder who has been on the receiving end of some glowing comments.

Why bargain Leeds star is a better signing than Stach

While Stach instantly bedding in will, of course, raised a few smiles in West Yorkshire, it would have been seen as a big disappointment if the German didn’t come in and hit the ground running from the get-go, having cost £17m to obtain.

Whereas, in the case of Sean Longstaff, Leeds fans would have known all about his Premier League credentials, but might well have erred on the side of caution over whether he’d be an instant success story, having arrived at Elland Road off the back of starting just eight league games last season for Newcastle United.

There needn’t have been any worries, however, with Nedem Onuoha’s prediction of Longstaff joining for just £12m being a “sneaky good” signing ringing very much true, with the former Magpies midfielder pretty much faultless last time out versus Bournemouth.

During that clash, he looked like one “one of the best signings in the Premier League” full stop – as was boldly declared by journalist Daniel Storey.

Staggeringly, away from firing home a superb effort and collecting an assist, the well-rounded 27-year-old also won a mammoth ten duels to ensure his side at least collected a share of the points against the Cherries.

His wider numbers make for some unbelievable reading, too, with Opta statistician Jonny Cooper revealing – after his impactful showing against Bournemouth – that Longstaff has covered a staggering 12km per league clash so far this season.

Also averaging more tackles per 90 minutes this season than Chelsea ace Moises Caicedo as per Fotmob – who once cost a staggering £115m – on top of also averaging more accurate passes than the likes of Crystal Palace favourite Adam Wharton, it’s already abundantly clear that Farke and Co have pulled off a major steal landing the Newcastle-born battler for just £12m.

Weighing up his modest fee next to Leeds’ other notable summer signings further reinforces the bargain Leeds have managed to seal, with injury-stricken goalkeeper Lucas Perri even costing a higher fee at the £15.6m mark.

Therefore, there is plenty of logic behind Storey’s claims, with Longstaff once even receiving praise from Pep Guardiola back in 2019 during the early days of his St James’ Park senior career.

While his time on Tyneside did unfortunately fizzle out, the “outstanding” 27-year-old – as he has already been labelled by his new manager – has undoubtedly already found a new lease of life away from his hometown side.

Longstaff is just one cog in Farke’s machine who can certainly play a key role in Leeds becoming top-flight regulars again.

Man City receive bid to sell £90k-a-week ace who Pep called "exceptional"

Manchester City have now received an offer for a £90k-a-week player, who Pep Guardiola has previously described as “exceptional”.

Pep questioned after deadline day Donnarumma signing

The emphatic 4-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers to kick the season off was arguably a false start for Man City, who have since been brought back down to earth with consecutive defeats, most recently suffering a late 2-1 loss away at Brighton.

As such, Guardiola has already made the big call to bring in a new goalkeeper, with City completing the deadline day signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is seemingly set to displace James Trafford in the starting XI.

There are some question marks over the signing of Donnarumma, given that the Italian isn’t regarded as a ‘Pep keeper’, as he is not well-known to be particularly impressive with the ball at his feet.

Former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said: “Donnarumma had a really good season with PSG and was instrumental in PSG winning the Champions League. He is OK with his feet but he is not Ederson – no-one is Ederson.”

With Ederson departing to join Fenerbahce, City are back to having four goalkeepers on the books, with Marcus Bettinelli also arriving this summer, but they now have a decision to make about the future of Stefan Ortega.

That is because a report from Sporx (via Sport Witness) has revealed that Trabzonspor have made a bid for Ortega, with the Turkish Süper Lig side keen to bring in a new goalkeeper before their transfer window comes to a close.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola consolesStefanOrtega

Ortega is not the only option available to the Turkish side, however, with it being revealed they have also been offered the opportunity to sign Manchester United’s Andre Onana, who is seemingly being forced out following the arrival of Senne Lammens.

"Exceptional" Ortega should be allowed to move on

Following Donnarumma’s arrival, the £90k-a-week goalkeeper is unlikely to have any opportunities, with Trafford ahead of him in the pecking order, while Bettinelli is also on the books in the case of a real emergency.

As such, Man City should sanction the 32-year-old’s departure, despite the fact he has impressed at times in a City shirt, with Guardiola saying in the 2022/23 campaign: “The way he’s played in Carabao Cup and FA Cup so far. Even in the Champions League when he played against Dortmund.

“We were qualified but fighting for the first position. He’s an exceptional goalkeeper. Exceptional.”

The German has been at the Etihad Stadium for two Premier League title triumphs, and famously played a pivotal role in the 2023-24 campaign, producing a crucial save to deny Son Heung-min in the penultimate game of the season.

That said, Pep is now well-stocked in the goalkeeper department, so there is no reason to stand in Ortega’s way if more clubs come calling.

Luis Enrique wants Barcelona! PSG boss still dreaming of return to La Liga champions after he leaves French giants

Luis Enrique may be enjoying success in Paris, but the pull of Barcelona remains strong. The Spanish coach, who guided Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League triumph last season, still dreams of returning to the Camp Nou one day. With two years left on his contract in France, though, a move may be far away.

  • Enrique’s enduring Barcelona dream

Enrique remains hopeful of one day managing Barcelona again. The Spaniard spent three years at the Camp Nou between 2014 and 2017, winning a historic treble in his first season and cementing his place as a club legend. Despite being contracted to PSG until 2027, he has made it clear within his close circle that a return to Catalunya would delight him, according to .

Glory in Paris but eyes on Catalonia

Since taking over Les Parisiens in 2023, the Asturian has guided the French giants to remarkable success, including their first-ever Champions League title last season. While he is settled in Paris and continues to build on that legacy, his attachment to the Catalan giants has not faded. He often admits to missing life in the city, though he has publicly stressed his commitment to honouring contracts.

  • Election year shifts the landscape

Barcelona's looming presidential elections could open a potential pathway for Enrique’s return. Such changes often reshape the managerial landscape at Camp Nou, and the former Spain coach is well aware of this. Still, Hansi Flick’s strong start and a deal running until 2027 make any short-term comeback unlikely.

Levy warned "standout" Tottenham target is now close to joining another club

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy have been sent a warning by intermediaries behind-the-scenes that one of their targets is now close to joining another club, according to a new report.

As we now enter the last three weeks of this summer’s transfer window, the pressure is on Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the Lilywhites recruitment team to shore up weakened areas of Thomas Frank’s squad.

Tottenham are already set to take on Ligue 1 and European champions PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday with an arguably weaker squad than last season, having lost club legend Son Heung-min to LAFC and James Maddison to a long-term ACL injury.

The need to strengthen is absolutely paramount, especially since fellow creative force Dejan Kulusevski will remain sidelined with his own knee problem for a “long time”, according to Frank.

Spurs have already signed Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus, Kota Takai and Joao Palhinha on loan this window, as well as triggering the obligation to buy in Kevin Danso’s deal from January, but the north Londoners are aiming to bring in more new additions before the deadline on September 1.

As widely reported, Tottenham are in talks with Man City over signing Brazilian winger Savinho after losing Son, with the former Girona star increasingly open to joining after Frank personally pinpointed him as the ideal signing.

A deal for the 21-year-old is likely to cost in excess of £45 million (Ben Jacobs), which could still be seen as excellent value considering Savinho’s age and performances in all competitions last season.

Meanwhile, to cope without Maddison for a large portion of 2025/2026, it is also believed that Spurs have emerged as serious contenders to sign Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze and could hijack Arsenal’s long-winded pursuit.

Levy and Lange were after a number 10 even before Maddison’s injury, having failed with a high-profile move for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White earlier in the window, but the need for a new attacking midfield maestro has now intensified.

According to reliable journalist Alasdair Gold recently, Tottenham are also keen on signing another centre-back.

Tottenham sent Joel Ordonez warning as Marseille close in on deal

As per TBR Football and journalist Graeme Bailey, Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez has been on their radar for around 12 months and the club have stayed in regular contact.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins in action with Club Brugge's JoelOrdonez

However, intermediaries have now warned Tottenham that Marseille are closing in on a deal for Ordonez, so if Levy is serious about signing the Ecuadorian, he’ll have to act very quickly.

Both Frank and Liverpool boss Arne Slot are said to be monitoring developments when it comes to the 21-year-old’s potential move to France, with Bailey reporting that Ordonez is viewed as a “standout” performer for Brugge and a “huge talent”.

“Ordonez is a huge talent, I am told by numerous Premier League clubs that this boy is held in huge regard,” said Bailey.

“He is one of those players that not just shows up analytically but when you watch him, he really is a standout performer.”

Andre Onana tipped for marquee transfer away from Man Utd in 2026 – with Trabzonspor loan being used as a springboard to better things

Andre Onana is being tipped to secure a marquee transfer away from Manchester United in 2026, with a loan spell at Trabzonspor allowing his reputation to be rebuilt. The Cameroon international is now out of sight and mind at Old Trafford, but the expectation is that another big club will come calling once his ability has been highlighted again in Turkey.

Costly mistakes after £48m move

Premier League giants United invested £48 million ($65m) prising Onana away from Inter in the summer of 2023. Errors crept into his game shortly after arriving in England, with costly mistakes proving difficult to shake across two testing campaigns.

AdvertisementGettyWhy United allowed Onana to leave

With the Red Devils in the market for a new No.1, as Senne Lammens eventually arrived from Royal Antwerp, the decision was taken to let Onana find a fresh start. He is considered to have made a wise choice in escaping the brightest of spotlights in Manchester.

Coach explains benefits of loan move

Cameroon coach Carlos Kameni told : “It’s a good choice. Andre was struggling at Manchester United. Last season, he was heavily criticised, and since the start of the season, he’d barely played (one cup match), and everyone, including him, understood that he was likely to spend a lot of time on the bench or in the stands.

“I told him he was right. It’s a good choice. It’s better to be a starter at a very good club in a good league than a substitute at a big club in a big league, right? In Turkey, he’ll certainly be watched, because he’s a very good goalkeeper, but I think he’ll be under a little less pressure than at Manchester United.”

GettyWill a top club come calling for Onana?

Quizzed on whether there will be a scramble for Onana’s signature next summer that takes him back to one of the top five divisions in Europe, Kameni added: “Yes. He hasn’t lost his qualities at Manchester United.

“As can happen to all great athletes, he may experience a more complicated spell for a few months. Andre Onana is very professional, he remains a reliable player, and if he has a good season in Turkey, he’ll be in demand next summer.”

Better striker than Yamada: Celtic could move to sign "amazing" £15m star

Celtic have already been busy this summer, but this activity is only set to continue.

The main headlines are the fact that Nicolas Kühn has been sold to Como for a reported fee of £16.4m but, in more exciting news, Kieran Tierney has returned on a free transfer, six years after departing for Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Nygren, Hayato Inamura, Callum Osmand, and Ross Doohan have also arrived, as has a new striker, more on him in just a second, but could Brendan Rodgers be about to reinforce his attacking options further?

Celtic's search for a striker

On Saturday morning, ahead of a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at Parkhead, Shin Yamada was unveiled as the Hoops’ latest summer recruit, arriving from Kawasaki Frontale for a reported fee of £1.5m.

The 25-year-old was the third-highest scorer in the J League last season with 19, accumulating a goal or an assist every 91 minutes, while also helping the Sky Blue and Blacks reach a first-ever AFC Champions League Final, dumping out Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr en route.

Nevertheless, following Wednesday’s pre-season friendly victory over Sporting CP in the Algrave, Rodgers stated that he wants “to add [more] to our front line”, so could he be about to get his wish?

Well, according to reports in Romania, Celtic have seen a bid of around £6.9m rejected for CFR Cluj striker Louis Munteanu.

They add that the 23-year-old is valued at closer to £16m by the Railwaymen, while Ligue 1 duo Nice and Lille have also expressed ‘interest’ in signing him.

Munteanu is expected to be on the move this summer but, if he is to end up in Glasgow, it would require a sizeable fee.

How Louis Munteanu would improve Celtic

Munteanu was signed by Fiorentina as a teenager, representing I Viola’s Primavera side, but never in the first team, thereby returning to Romania with Farul Constanța, before joining CFR Cluj for around £2m last summer.

Lousi Munteanu.

Well, safe to say he has impressed in Transylvania, scoring 26 goals in 43 appearances for Cluj, ending up the Romanian top division’s leading scorer, while also on target during a Europa League qualifying victory over Hungarian outfit Paksi FC at Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu as recently as last Thursday.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout documented the striker’s “amazing season”, while Ewan Paton of the National labelled his form ‘sensational’, having become the first player to reach 23 goals in a single Liga I season since Mihai Adam 51 years ago.

So how does he compare to Celtic’s latest striker signing Yamada?
