India become the first side to lose 20 wickets in a Test match as a result of catches

Sampath Bandarupalli13-Jan-20221 Rishabh Pant’s century was the first for India in an all-out total under 200 in Test cricket. Twelve players before Pant have scored a Test hundred in an all-out innings of less than 200, but none while batting at No.6 or lower.58.82 Percentage of team runs contributed by Pant in the second innings. Only one batter made a higher contribution for India while batting at No. 6 or lower in a completed Test innings – 62.32% by Kapil Dev with his 129 against South Africa in 1992.

3 Number of wicketkeepers to score a Test hundred in all of England, Australia and South Africa – Adam Gilchrist, Jonny Bairstow and Pant. No Indian keeper before Pant had scored a Test century in any of these three countries.4 Number of hundreds for Pant in Test cricket. These are the second-most for an Indian wicketkeeper, behind MS Dhoni’s six centuries. Three of Pant’s four hundreds have come outside India – no other Indian keeper has more than one Test hundred away from home.19 Number of wickets for Marco Jansen in this series. Only four bowlers have taken more wickets in their debut Test series of three or fewer matches. Jansen’s 19 wickets are also the most in a Test series for South Africa since their re-admission in 1992.

20 Number of wickets lost by India as a result of catches in Cape Town, the first team to lose all 20 wickets to this kind of dismissal in a Test match. There have been five previous instances of a team losing 19 wickets as a result of catches in a Test match – the last of those by South Africa against England in 2020, also in Cape Town.55 Number of wickets lost by India as a result of catches in the series against South Africa, the most by a team in a three-match Test series. The previous highest for this kind of dismissal was 48 wickets by Pakistan against New Zealand in 2009.94.75 Keshav Maharaj’s bowling average in Test cricket against India. It is the worst average in Tests against India for any player to have bowled 1000-plus balls. Only seven players have a worse bowling average against an opponent in Tests (min: 1000 balls bowled).

Roundtable: Previewing the Final Month of MLB’s Regular Season

We're officially in the final month of MLB’s regular season, with most teams having fewer than 25 games left to play. There is no division leader with a double-digit game cushion, five of the six divisions featuring a maximum of a six-game gap and three with a three-game maximum. September should bring lots of excitement down to the final weekend, so we prompted some of SI’s MLB writers to reflect on what’s transpired so far this season and what may lie ahead.

1. Which team are you most confident about penciling in for a World Series berth?

Tom Verducci: Los Angeles Dodgers. They can look almost bored at times. They have not been a good team on the road (33–33), against lefties (19–20) or the past two months (22–27). But they know how to play October baseball: swing-and-miss starting pitchers, home run hitters and a deep bullpen. Under manager Dave Roberts, they have won four of the past eight NL pennants and posted a .560 winning percentage in the playoffs. Respect the pedigree.

Stephanie Apstein: They had a terrible July and a mediocre August, but the Dodgers feel like they're about to get hot and stay hot. This is what they do: look sort of disappointing down the stretch, then get all their injured guys back and start beating the snot out of teams. With Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow back, they have six legitimate starting pitchers, and the bullpen is beginning to look dangerous again. Once Max Muncy and Tommy Edman return, they should be at close to full strength, and their full strength is better than anyone else's.

Ryan Phillips: I know it's boring to say this, but the Dodgers. They're getting healthy at the right time, Mookie Betts is starting to turn it on and Shohei Ohtani is improving on the mound. If Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow can round into form, L.A.'s bullpen will be the team's only concern.

2. Which team currently in a playoff position is most susceptible to a September collapse?

Eugenio Suarez has been a disappointment in Seattle thus far, slashing .188/.259/.406 in 28 games. / Steven Bisig-Imagn Images

TV: Seattle Mariners. They batted .228 in August. They have the third-most strikeouts in the majors and the most among contenders. Entering this week, they were 2–9 in their last two Eastern trips with more traps ahead at Tampa Bay and Atlanta—then lost their first game against the Rays on Monday. And they are too reliant on Cal Raleigh continuing his magical season while his OPS declined a third straight month in August. The Mariners are 31–10 when Raleigh homers but 42–55 when he doesn’t go yard.

SA: I don't think they'll actually play their way out of the postseason, but the New York Yankees are hard to watch these days, even when they're beating up on the likes of the Nationals and White Sox. They have gotten the worst catcher production in the sport. Shortstop Anthony Volpe has as many errors (7) as walks since the All-Star break, and his .210 batting average is second-worst in baseball among qualified hitters. And the bullpen ERA since the break has been 4.60.

RP: The New York Mets, simply because they've collapsed several times already this year. There is no reason they should be as inconsistent as they have been. At one point, they lost 10 of 11 in June and 14 of 16 during a stretch of July and August. They have also lost three of their last five. Are we sure their four-game cushion over the Reds will hold?

3. Who's an underrated awards contender deserving of more recognition?

TV: The American League Cy Young Race is more than a two-pitcher race. Tarik Skubal has a slight lead over Garrett Crochet, but don’t forget about Hunter Brown. With a 1.72 ERA in his past six starts, he is surging into September. Here is how they rank in various league categories:

SA: No one cares because AL MVP is a two-man race between Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh, and the Royals are probably going to miss the playoffs, but it's very possible that the best season in the AL this year is going to belong to Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. He's 25, he's the best defensive shortstop in the game by most measures and he's the only player in baseball with at least 30 doubles and 25 stolen bases—and he actually has 41 doubles and 34 stolen bases. I'm just saying, don't forget about him.

RP: Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal have been runaway favorites to win the Cy Young in both leagues for three months, but Phillies lefty Cristopher Sanchez has quietly caught up with Skenes in Baseball Reference’s version of WAR (6.4), putting them in a tie for second in all of baseball trailing only Aaron Judge. While he's unlikely to overtake Skenes, he deserves consideration. In 27 starts, he is 11–5 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 181 strikeouts against 41 walks in 169 1/3 innings. With Zack Wheeler out, he'll enter October as Philadelphia's No. 1 starter.

4. What's surprised you the most about the regular season so far?

TV: For the first time in 20 years, the strikeout rate has declined four a second straight season—and for the fourth time in the past five full seasons. The changes are incremental, but baseball has put the brakes on the runaway strikeout from 2006-19, when it went up 14 straight years. The level of strikeouts per game this year is the lowest it’s been since 2017.

SA: Atlanta's complete ineptitude. The Orioles have been terrible, too, but at least they're getting bad seasons from basically all their good players. Atlanta has scored the 15th most runs in the sport—that's not championship-caliber, but it won't usually put you in position for a top-five draft pick, either. Unfortunately you also have to pitch half the time, and they do that worse than almost anyone else. (It doesn't help that they have an entire good starting rotation on the injured list.) It's just been a bummer of a season for a young team that should be in its prime.

RP: How wide open the World Series picture is. Before the season, most believed the Dodgers, Phillies, Mets and Braves would battle for the NL, while the Yankees and Orioles had tons of buzz in the AL. Fast forward to September, and the Brewers and Tigers are the best teams in baseball, the Dodgers are barely ahead of the Padres in the NL West, and the Yankees and Mets are fighting for playoff spots—with the Braves long out of contention. Every team currently occupying a playoff spot is a legitimate threat to take home the title. It's been years since we could say that.

5. Make a bold prediction for September.

TV: Paul Skenes of the Pirates will break the no-hitter drought. The last no-hitter was Sept. 4, 2024, when three Cubs pitchers no-hit the Pirates. The last season without a no-no was 2005. Skenes was pulled with a no-hitter last year once after six innings and once after seven. The governors are off.

SA: The Mets will win the NL East. The Phillies have had a rough few weeks, between the news that Zack Wheeler, probably the best pitcher in baseball, is out for months as he recovers from thoracic outlet surgery, and the fact that they keep losing to worse teams; meanwhile, New York swept Philly last week and called up two hot young pitching prospects.

RP: The Mariners will overtake the Astros to win the AL West. Houston just won 8 of 17 during a stretch with 14 games against the Rockies, Orioles and Angels. Their September schedule gets considerably more difficult, while the Mariners have the sixth-easiest remaining slate. That will help Seattle to its first division title since 2001.

England confirm March opponents for final games before Thomas Tuchel picks 2026 World Cup squad

England have confirmed their opponents for the March international break, which they are set to play their final games before Thomas Tuchel picks his final squad for the 2026 World Cup. They have been drawn in Group L and will face Croatia, Panama and Ghana at the finals, where they will be looking to break their major trophy curse, which has extended to 60 years.

England learn their March opponents

The Football Association have scheduled two friendlies against Uruguay and Japan on March 27 and 31, respectively. These games represent the last chance for players to stake a claim prior to Tuchel naming his group for the 2026 finals. The FA is also planning a series of further friendlies in the United States in June, giving Tuchel and his staff valuable time to acclimatise to conditions ahead of their opening match on June 17 in Dallas.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportSouth American and Asian tests chosen

Uruguay, ranked 16th in the world by FIFA, will provide England’s first challenge of 2026. The fixture marks Uruguay’s first visit to England in two decades. The last meeting on British soil came in 2006, when Peter Crouch and Joe Cole secured a 2-1 win at Anfield. The more recent encounter between the two nations took place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for England, courtesy of Luis Suarez’s brace, while Wayne Rooney scored the only goal for England.

Japan, ranked 18th, complete the March pairing. England’s limited history with the Samurai Blue consists of only three previous contests, the most recent of which came in Austria ahead of the 2010 World Cup. That game resulted in a 2-1 English victory. Their only previous Wembley meeting came in 1995, a 2-1 England win. In a clash in Manchester in 2004, the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.

Tuchel said he specifically sought opponents inside the world’s top 20 to ensure the competitive level was sufficiently high.

"We are really pleased to have these two fixtures confirmed as our World Cup year takes shape," he said. "We wanted to play two teams ranked in the top 20 in the world, but also to test ourselves against opponents from outside of Europe. After Friday’s draw, the excitement for next year is really building."

Tuchel happy to play on the East Coast

Tuchel admitted that the cooler temperatures on America’s East Coast, where England will play two of their group games, against Ghana and Panama in Boston and New York, respectively, come as a personal relief.

Talking to , Tuchel said: "That would be very helpful for me personally! But I didn't get my head fully around it, so we need to come up with a good plan to be well prepared. We need to be prepared to be flexible, we need to be prepared to travel a lot no matter what's happening. The biggest focus will be on the group and to not get distracted in thinking too far ahead."

Tuchel is aware that external perceptions of England have changed. For years, debates raged over whether the national team could live up to the extraordinary individual reputations of its players. Now, after qualifying with eight wins from eight, remarkably without conceding a single goal, England arrive in the United States as one of the contenders most feared by other nations.

On being considered as a favourite, Tuchel added: "I think they [other nations] do. We made sure that they do, if they don't do it's also good, so we can play the underdog card. But I think the team played so well and they know that we are full of hunger and we will arrive full of desire to make something special happen, they take us very seriously."

Getty/GOALEngland’s World Cup route: Group stage offers favourable timings

England’s campaign begins against Croatia on June 17 in Dallas, followed by Ghana in Boston on June 23 and Panama in New York on June 27. The match timings, 9 pm, 9 pm and 10 pm BST, have been welcomed by supporters who feared dawn kick-offs, given the five-hour time difference between England and most host cities. Indeed, the group stage offers relatively comfortable viewing windows for UK audiences.

But progress could complicate matters. Should England top Group L, their first knockout fixture in the round of 32 would take place in Atlanta at 5 pm BST. Beyond that, however, the schedule becomes far more gruelling. Their round of 16 tie, should they win the group, would begin at 1 am BST, potentially against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium. It would represent one of the most unforgiving kick-off times for an English fan.

ANÁLISE DO JOGO

HUGO MOURA
– É um jogador de meio de campo. Tivemos a lesão de Paulinho e de Jair. Necessitamos reforçar ali no meio.

Pep Guardiola reveals 'the truth' about Arsenal with admission he fears title race will be too difficult for Man City

Pep Guardiola has revealed "the truth" about Arsenal, with the Manchester City boss admitting that the Gunners may become "impossible to catch" in the Premier League title race. The Catalan coach has, however, pointed out that "now the real season starts" as a flurry of international breaks have been completed and full focus becomes locked on the pursuit of precious points.

Arsenal lead the way: Can Man City chase down the Gunners?

City sit second in the table as things stand, four points behind leaders Arsenal through 11 fixtures. That gap is not too big to be bridged at present, but the Gunners have lost just one game so far this season. They also boast the best defensive record in the division, having only been breached on five occasions.

City have found form again, winning their last four games across all competitions – including a 3-0 victory over defending champions Liverpool immediately prior to the November break – and have star striker Erling Haaland in red-hot form.

AdvertisementGettyTitle race: Guardiola sounds Premier League warning

Guardiola does, however, concede that Arsenal are making life difficult for the chasing pack. He said ahead of a testing trip to Newcastle on Saturday for his City side: "The truth is a team as strong as Arsenal I have a feeling they will not drop points, so if they go further ahead it will be impossible to catch. Arsenal are an impeccable team. If they manage to take some distance in points, it will be difficult to catch up. Just like how it went with Liverpool."

The English top-flight crown headed to Anfield last season as Liverpool eased over the line, with there never any threat of an early lead in the standings being surrendered. Guardiola knows what it takes to get over that line, having led City to six titles – including a historic run of four-in-a-row between 2020 and 2024.

He has pointed out that there is still a long way to go in another battle for domestic supremacy, with it always about how you finish. Guardiola added: "We are in November, and in November in this league nothing is final.

"What happens in February or March, be careful. But the season starts now. The first start is when the transfer window is over in the summer. And now again when the international breaks are over.

"Now until March we see each other every three days. Now the real season starts. It is important to be there and to arrive at the end of the season with a chance to fight. Winning (in Newcastle) would be an important step for us."

Red-hot Haaland: Shearer record set to be broken

Guardiola is preparing to unleash Haaland again when heading to St James’ Park, with the prolific Norwegian hitting 32 goals through 20 appearances for club and country this season. He sits on 99 total efforts in the Premier League and is preparing to smash a record held by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer when it comes to reaching a century in the fewest number of games. Haaland is preparing for outing 109, while Shearer took 124 to reach 100 goals.

Guardiola said of his talismanic No.9, who has helped Norway to their first World Cup since 1998: "He’s incredible this season. He’s breaking all the records, personal and individual records, Premier League records, records for Norway. I’m happy for him, his national team.

"I saw that many of the squad for Norway weren’t even born the last time Norway were in the World Cup. As a football player, a world-class player, he deserves to play a World Cup and live the experience. I’m so happy for him."

Getty ImagesMan City fixtures: Next up for Guardiola's side

While Haaland is raring to go, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is not yet ready to make his latest return from injury – having been sidelined since early October. Guardiola said of the Spain international midfielder: "Rodri is making good steps. It’s almost three weeks since the last step back. He knows that he has to take the real time to recover mentally and especially physically with the problems that he’s had, to be consistent from now until the end."

After facing Newcastle, City will return to the Etihad Stadium for a Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen and a Premier League home date with Leeds.

Moyes must unleash Everton teen who's a bigger talent than Harrison Armstrong

Everton spent a lot of time spinning their wheels with Farhad Moshiri at the head of the table, but David Moyes is working well within the Friedkin Group’s parameters, and there’s a new sense of belief on the blue half of Merseyside.

There’s no question the Blues have improved since the Scotsman’s exciting return, almost 12 years after closing the door on his dynasty and succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, but more is needed to hit that elusive next level: contending for a seat at the European table.

While there may be an acceptance that the Toffees need external solutions, there’s one player plying their trade elsewhere who’s guaranteed a shot in Moyes’ squad next season, given that they are contracted to the Hill Dickinson Stadium already.

Indeed, Harrison Armstrong’s loan spell with Preston North End is drawing many plaudits, suggesting he is destined for success in the Premier League.

Why Harrison Armstrong is Everton's future

Armstrong, 18, has been at Everton since he was five years old. He is young and raw, but the talent has been clear from the get-go, with Sean Dyche featuring him three times in the league last season.

This season, the athletic, progressive centre-midfielder racked up two assists for Everton as they beat Mansfield Town in the Carabao Cup second round, ahead of his season-long switch to Preston in the Championship.

He’s making good progress in the second tier. The 18-year-old was praised for a statement showing against Sheffield United recently, winning six of eight contested ground duels and completing both of his dribbles.

There was much to like on loan at Derby County last year, but Armstrong has evolved and developed since the summer, and that bodes well for his future in the Premier League.

Preston fans are certain Armstrong “will play for England one day”, and Everton must ensure they keep him on the books and help nurture him to the fore.

And the same must be applied to one of the youngster’s Toffees teammates, a rising star who might even be a bigger talent.

Everton have a bigger talent than Armstrong

This summer, Moyes oversaw sweeping changes as Everton moved house. Among the most high-profile and exciting deals was the £42m signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton, the teenage talent having broken out on the south coast last term.

The 19-year-old only scored four goals and provided three assists across all competitions last season, but Southampton were in a dire state and he was a shining light throughout, blending pace and power and potency down the flank.

This season, Dibling has featured only four times in the Premier League, hooked at half time during his only start, the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

It’s been a slow start, but he’s immensely talented and has the potential to outstrip all his teammates in Moyes’ system.

With a natural ease when carrying the ball that will only develop over the coming years, Dibling is also positionally dynamic and has effortless balance.

Output and effectiveness are two facets he needs to keep working on, but there’s no question that Everton have a gem on their hands, potentially an even bigger talent than someone like Armstrong.

Despite entering the professional scene for the first time, despite trying to find success as a creator in a, frankly, dismal Saints side, Dibling showcased his quality, backing up the claims of his former youth coach Andy Goldie that he is a “world-class talent”.

Given Everton paid a hefty figure for the teenager’s services, and that he has a full Premier League campaign under his belt, it’s certainly not unjust to suggest that Dibling is a bigger talent than Armstrong, who may be thriving at Deepdale but has even further to climb if he wishes to successfully wedge his way into Moyes’ plans.

In any case, this all serves as an exciting nod toward the future for the Merseysiders.

With Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson and Tim Weah among injury-riddled player pool, who does Mauricio Pochettino turn to? USMNT roster projection for November camp

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, GOAL looks at how the U.S. squad might look in the upcoming November camp

To close the 2025 calendar year, the U.S. men's national team booked heavy-hitting opponents, both of whom have already qualified for next summer's World Cup. Up first is Paraguay, a team clearly on the upswing ahead of their first World Cup since 2010. Then comes Uruguay, one of the world's best teams – and the squad that knocked the USMNT out of the 2024 Copa America on home soil.

The plan, then, always seemed to be to really attack these games, to use them as a measuring stick against World Cup quality opposition. Unfortunately, due to injuries, it's unlikely Maurcio Pochettino will be able to field the best version of the USMNT.

Heading towards the November international break, the U.S. is dealing with something of an injury crisis. Multiple key players are dealing with issues of varying concern. Some could just do with a rest. Others need to be assessed as Pochettino and his staff partner with clubs to assess players' short- and long-term future.

There will be some missing pieces this month. The big question is how many?

So who's in and who's out? What are the tough calls Pochettino will have to make? GOAL takes a look.

GettyFirst, the injured list

We'll start at the top with Christian Pulisic, whose status for this camp has been a talking point. He hasn't featured for AC Milan since going down with an injury after a rash tackle in the USMNT's 2-1 win over Australia on Oct. 14, reports out of Italy suggest the club Milan were none too pleased about Pulisic's workload.

Milan have reportedly asked the USMNT to leave Pulisic with the club during this international break as he continues his recovery and – considering the fact that he hasn't played since injury – that's almost certainly the best course of action for all involved.

Antonee Robinson, too, was in last month's camp but, due to his injury situation, didn't play in either game. In fact, he hasn't played since a 10-minute cameo against Aston Villa in late September, and will almost certainly be left out of this camp.

Two key midfielders, Malik Tillman and Johnny Cardoso, are nearing their returns from injury, and both could use USMNT minutes to solidify their places. Again, though, calling in either could be a risk due to their lack of minutes.

Then there's Tim Weah. He's dealing with a thigh injury and all indications are that he won't be available for these two USMNT friendlies. Same for Cameron Carter-Vickers, who will be out for months after getting injured with Celtic.

Depending on which combination of those are available, if any, there could be some monstrous gaps in the roster.

GOAL's picks: Matt Freese, Patrick Schulte, Matt Turner, Chris Brady

This group, more than most, might be at the mercy of MLS playoff scheduling. Last camp, Pochettino said that call-ups were made with the MLS postseason in mind, so don't be surprised if someone such as Freese or Schulte is left at home should their teams advance.

Because we're talking goalkeepers here, though, there's less concern about wear and tear, so Pochettino could opt to barrel ahead with his full-strength group. If Freese does stay with NYCFC, it would open the door for Turner to make a long awaited return as a starter. We haven't seen him play for the USMNT since the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, with Freese serving as the USMNT's No. 1 since.

With or without the NYCFC goalkeeper, could Turner get a look this camp after getting back into form playing for the New England Revolution? This position is still very much in flux.

GOAL's picks: Max Arfsten, Noahkai Banks, Sergino Dest, Alex Freeman, Mark McKenzie, Tim Ream, Chris Richards,  Miles Robinson

Starting with the centerbacks, Richards is a talking point after Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner took aim at the USMNT over the defender's workload. He then proceeded to play him for 90 minutes immediately after, making that more posturing than any serious concern. The USMNT can surely call in Richards if they want to and, given his importance to the team, why wouldn't they?

Next to him, Ream could be left at home for Charlotte FC's playoff run. But even if they don't advance, a bit of a break probably wouldn't be too bad for him. He is a proven commodity, after all, so there isn't much harm in leaving him off. That, then, could open the door for someone such as Banks or perhaps even Campbell to get some valuable minutes at centerback after having some good moments to start the European season.

At wingback, Dest is back playing for PSV and could certainly use more time with Pochettino and his staff. Freeman, meanwhile, is fresh off an MLS Young Player of the Year award and continues to grow with the national team, so that's the right side taken care of. On the left, Arfsten has largely stepped up in Antonee Robinson's absence, while Dest can provide depth, too.

The wildcard? Scally. He has been performing in the Bundesliga but has been crowded out of the U.S. fullback position in recent months. Could this be the camp he leaps back into the picture?

GOAL's picks: Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Diego Luna, Weston McKennie, Aidan Morris, Cristian Roldan, James Sands, Tanner Tessmann

With some notable absences such as Pulisic and Tillman, there is a lack of attacking firepower in the midfield. McKennie is seen in that spot, so the good news is he's available. Brenden Aaronson, meanwhile, is in good form at Leeds and could use this opportunity to lock down a World Cup spot.

Then there's the big one: Reyna. He's played sparingly for Borussia Monchengladbach, but is there a need for his creativity this camp?

In terms of deeper midfielders, no worries. Adams should be back, although a knock suffered this past weekend against Manchester City might impact things. Tessmann, Sands, Morris and Roldan, meanwhile, are all fighting for a spot next to him, while McKennie, too, could drop back if needed.

Sai Sudharsan: Feels 'surreal' to be part of India's Test squad

He says he is wary of the challenge of switching to Test cricket from T20s

Sai Sudharsan: The ultimate goal is to play Test cricket

B Sai Sudharsan has said that it feels “surreal” to receive his maiden Test call-up for India’s upcoming five-match series in England.”It obviously feels great. Feels very special to be honest, and surreal also. Any cricketer, any young cricketer who starts playing cricket, wants to play Test cricket, wants to play for the country,” he said on the eve of Gujarat Titans’ match against Chennai Super Kings, a few hours after the India Test squad was announced. “The ultimate goal is always to play Test cricket. So really happy for that.”Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Sai Sudharsan is set to be a part of India’s new-look top four. Sai Sudharsan usually opens the batting for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, India’s domestic first-class tournament, but he is ready to bat at any position for India. He has batted in the middle order for Surrey in county cricket and overall has scored 1957 runs in 29 first-class games at an average of just under 40, including seven hundreds and five fifties. The most recent hundred came at No.3 for India A against Australia A in Mackay in November last year.Related

“Sir, I think playing for the country itself is a very big privilege for a cricketer. So I don’t think I am in a position to choose where I want to play,” Sai Sudharsan said when asked about his preference in the batting line-up. “Wherever the coaches tell me to play, I think I will be mentally and obviously skillfully, you know, try and be ready for the opportunity.”I have a lot of likings. I think I will have to be ready for whichever [position] the team gives me. I will be ready for that.”His first Test call-up coincides with Shubman Gill, his skipper at GT, being named India’s new red-ball captain.”I mean, Shubhi is, over the years, I have been a part of his growth as well,” Sai Sudharsan said. “I have seen him for the last four years. Such a talented batsman, such a skillful batsman, anybody can see.”So I feel he will definitely do laurels and great things for the country and I am grateful and I am very happy to play under him in my first Test series.”4:48

Agarkar explains the all-important selection calls for India’s tour to England

The five-match series against England starts on June 20, and before that both Sai Sudharsan and Gill will join the India A side for the second four-dayer against England Lions, which starts on on June 6 in Northampton. Sudharsan, however, said that his immediate focus is on the IPL, where GT have qualified for the knockouts.”I always feel finish the first story, then go to the next one because now the IPL is also most important when we are in IPL,” he said. “So I think it is also most important of finishing this and then obviously we will have time to prepare. So I will use that bracket of days so that we will be ready for the Test series.”Sudharsan is also mindful of the challenge of switching from T20s to Test cricket.”Transitioning from white ball to red ball takes a bit of time,” he said. “I think I focus a lot more on my basics. I focus a lot more on my patience even outside the field.”The more patient you are, the more it reflects inside the field. So Test cricket is all about patience and longevity. So I feel the more I focus on that, the more I be aware of it, I think it will be a great experience.”

Thibaut Courtois insists Jude Bellingham must go to the World Cup with England after missing out on Thomas Tuchel's latest squad

Thibaut Courtois is of the opinion that his Real Madrid team-mate Jude Bellingham has to play for England at the 2026 World Cup. A surprising debate has been sparked there, with the all-action midfielder being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest Three Lions squad. He is still recovering from injury, but questions have been asked of Bellingham’s character and how he fits into the puzzle being pieced together by a demanding German coach.

Injury and lack of game time: Why England left Bellingham out

Belgium international Courtois is in no doubt that Bellingham will form part of England’s plans when FIFA’s flagship event heads to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The expectation is that he will return to that fold when another break in domestic action is reached in November.

Bellingham should be fully up to speed by then, with the 22-year-old working his way back from summer shoulder surgery. He has taken in just five appearances for Real this season, with only one start – in a derby date with neighbours Atletico Madrid – being seen under new Blancos boss Xabi Alonso.

Courtois is convinced that Bellingham will be recalled long before another bid for global glory is taken in, telling reporters when asked if he expects a club colleague to join him at a major tournament in North America: “Yes, of course. I don’t think we can imagine England without Jude. He should be in the England squad, definitely.”

The Belgian shot-stopper added on the Three Lions confirming their World Cup qualification without Bellingham – with the Blancos star also absent from fixtures in September: “I don’t think it’s a problem. Jude is coming back from an injury, a surgery and he has to get his fitness in.

“He has to play. He hasn’t had so many minutes so for England and Real Madrid it is better that he is training and getting that extra physical work. Now we have a couple of tough games and hopefully he will help because he is an amazing player. He is one of our best players. I don’t know if Tuchel has called him or not. But I’m sure that even in November he will be back in the England squad. You want a player like Jude in the squad.”

Courtois went on to say of Real and England handling Bellingham with care: “He has had a long injury of four months so you cannot force them to go too fast. If you do then you can get muscle injuries and have a few weeks out and then if it happens again you can have another few weeks out. You need to have optimum fitness and then it will be OK.”

Why questions of Bellingham's character are 'nonsense'

Ex-England international Danny Murphy told GOAL recently when asked about Bellingham’s supposed flaws, which could be considered positives in the eyes of many: “I played with [Wayne] Rooney in his early England days, I played with ]Steven] Gerrard at Liverpool – they both had that fire, that extra edge to them that put them above everybody else, that belief in themselves. You can interpret it any way you want. I think the only relevant factor when you talk about people like that, young lads that have come on the scene and done what he’s done, it’s what do they produce on the pitch? How does it affect the game and how does it affect him?

“Some people are suggesting that the team would be more cohesive without him in it. It’s just nonsense. We have got lots of good players, of course. I love Morgan Rogers, he has done well the lad from Villa, he has come in and he can play. Cole Palmer, I’m one of his biggest fans but Bellingham, you don’t walk into Real Madrid in your first season and do what he did without having that belief in yourself. I hope, really hope, that he continues with that same attitude and approach because it makes him one of the best players in the world.”
